16.09. (Thu) 19:00 Aris - Atletico Madrid

Spanish Connections

Amongst the clutch of early kick-offs in the Europa League on Thursday night, reigning champions Atletico Madrid will get their campaign underway in Thessaloniki, where they meet an Aris side who finished fourth in Super League Greece last term.

There is no shortage of European experience in the dugout of the Greek outfit, where they are commanded by former Valencia coach Hector Cuper, who unfortunately saw los Che lose successive Champions League finals under his stewardship.

On the field, Aris don’t command such well known faces, though Freddy Adu can be counted amongst their ranks, despite the American’s recent slump in form that has seen him tumble from a highly touted talent to a forgotten man.

A sprinkling of Spaniards in the Aris ranks will certainly be keen to make an impression against a side doing so well in their homeland. Former Barcelona B midfielders Javito and Toni Calvo should be convened in the first XI come Thursday evening, while ex-Malaga and Olympique de Marseille No.10 Koke is liable to play a key role in the offence.

With plenty of connections to La Primera, Aris have plenty of motivation to secure a good result.

Minds On Barca?

While Aris can afford to think largely about this game, already Atletico Madrid may be letting their minds wander from the competition they won so impressively last season. A strong start domestically has them with a 100 per cent record after two games, topping the Spanish table, with some pundits already starting to muse over los Colchoneros’ ability to remain there.

Moreover, Sunday brings with it a massive test for Quique Sanchez Flores’ side, who will line-up against Barcelona in the first real acid test of their abilities. Understandably that will take top billing in the minds of all at the Madrid club, and already the press are hounding the players with their thoughts of that fixture as opposed to their musings over Aris.

Alvaro Dominguez has been one player to comment on the Europa League, and the young defender has said that his side will fight tooth and nail to succeed in it. “It is clear that the league is what feeds the club and we know that our main goal is to be in the top four in the league but we do not rule out the other competitions,” he explained to Marca. “The team is good, has a good squad and we intend to fight in all competitions.”

After a tremendous victory over Athletic Bilbao in Pamplona last weekend – a venue that neither Barca nor Real Madrid claimed three points at last term – confidence should be high that the momentum can continue on Thursday, though it will probably be fringe men sent out to do the job.

TEAM NEWS

Aris

Suspensions will prove an issue for Aris, who have already played four European games this season, seeing off Jagiellonia Bialystok and Austria Vienna. Juan Carlos Toja, Neto and Danijel Cesarec, all of whom have been regular starters this season, miss out.

Alvaro Portilla, who was transferred to Aris from Atletico in the summer, may get his chance to excel.

Probable Starting XI:
Sifakis; Vangjeli, Guiaro, Lazaridis, Michel; Javito, Nafti, Portilla, Calvo; Koke, Carlos Ruiz

Atletico

No risks will be taken with the fitness of Sergio Aguero, who was withdrawn early from the encounter against Athletic Bilbao due to an ankle sprain. It’s looking likely that he’ll be fit for Barcelona though.

Another man missing is Tomas Ujfalusi, though there is also genuine hope that he returns in time for Sunday’s big match.

Expect to see significant rotation from Quique Sanchez Flores to keep his men in prime condition.

Probable Starting XI:
De Gea; Perea, Godin, Antonio Lopez, Filipe; Merida, Camacho, Suarez, Simao; Diego Costa, Diego Forlan

Prediction
It would be a little hasty to consider this a match that will be easily won by Atletico. With Barcelona forthcoming, changes will be made in their squad and it should not be forgotten that Aris are unbeaten at home in Europe since 1970 – a run stretching 21 games. The Greeks will have a hard time making it 22, but with the home support behind them and an incredibly motivated squad, a draw should not be discounted.

16.09. (Thu) 19:00 Sparta Praha - Palermo

Looking For Some Luck

Czech side Sparta Prague are competing in the group stage of the UEFA Cup/Europa League for the fourth time in five years but have yet to progress beyond the group phase in Europe's second level club competition.
The Czech champions are currently third in the league in the new season with 15 points from eight games. This is certainly not a great start to the campaign but they will be keen to resurrect themselves against Palermo at home on Thursday.
"We had several observers at Palermo's games against Cagliari and at Brescia,'' said Sparta coach Jozef Chovanec. "We have been watching the tapes and we are ready."

Kickstarting Their Season

Palermo narrowly missed out on a Champions League place last season when they pipped to the fourth spot in Serie A by Sampdoria. The Sicilians also lost a few key players this summer and have made their worst start to a league campaign since gaining promotion to Italy's top-flight six years ago.
Having drawn 0-0 with Cagliari and losing 3-2 to Brescia in their opening two games of the new league season, Palermo need to conjure up something on Thursday and breathe life into their season and striker Abel Hernandez knows that.
"We have struggled in the domestic campaign so far,'' he said. "We know we need to improve in every aspect of our game. We will try to change the trend in our next games. A win in Prague could be the turning point for us.''
He added, "We have the right players to do well. It will be crucial to take small steps, focusing on each game in order to go through to the next round.I am certain we will go far in this competition.''

TEAM NEWS

Coach Delio Rossi will be without strikers Fabrizio Miccoli and Mauricio Pinilla, who are still sidelined through injury. Midfielder Antonio Nocerino is suspended.
Probable Lineup (4-3-1-2): Sirigu, Cassani, Munoz, Bovo, Balzaretti; Migliaccio, Liverani, Kasami; Pastore; Hernandez, Maccarone

16.09. (Thu) 19:00 Juventus - Lech Poznan

Hoping For A Win
Juventus underwent a mini-revolution of sorts in the summer when they appointed Luigi Del Neri as their new coach and also signed a number of new players. The Bianconeri are supposedly a better and stronger side than they were last season but their start to the 2010-11 campaign has been disappointing.

After losing 1-0 to Bari away from home in their maiden game in Serie A, the former Italian and European champions were held to a 3-3 draw by Sampdoria in Turin. Indeed, Juventus will be determined to make a winning start to the Europa League on Thursday as they are one of the favourites to go far in the competition.

"It's a difficult competition, with many high-level teams like Liverpool and Manchester City also in the tournament,'' said striker Alessandro Del Piero ahead of the game. "It will not be easy for any team to go all the way.''

Underdog Status

Lech Poznan are not expected to do much in the Europa League and indeed in a group that also has Manchester City and Salzburg the Polish champions wouldn't expect themselves to progress. Jacek Zielisnki's side lost to Sparta Prague in the Champions League third qualifying round and were subsequently 'relegated' to the Europa League group stage.

However, the status of an underdog means that Lech will travel to Turin without pressure of any kind and even a point against Juventus will be hailed as a success.

"I think Juve may underestimate our abilities and may not be fully focused for the upcoming match,'' said midfielder Sergei Krivets. "If that is the case, we will have a great chance to come back home with a decent result.''

He added, "It is a very difficult group. But at the same time it is also a very attractive one. "We know that we are outsiders in this group but we will do our best and try to get good results."

TEAM NEWS

Juventus

Summer signing Quagliarella is not eligible to play in the Europa League, meaning that Del Piero will line up alongside Iaquinta in attack. Buffon, Martinez, Amauri and Traore are out as well.
Probable Lineup (4-4-2): Storari, Motta, Bonucci, Chiellini, De Cegli; Krasic, Felipe Melo, Marchisio, Pepe; Iaquinta, Del Piero

Lech Poznan

Serbian midfielder Dimitrije Injac is back after shaking off a muscular problem but might not start. However, Zielinski will be without striker Jacek Kielb, who is injured.
Probable Lineup (4-3-2-1): Buric, Wojtkowiak, Arboleda, Durdevic, Henriquez; Bandrowski, Krivets, Stilic; Kikut, Kiełb; Tshibamba

Prediction
Juventus should win this game but it doesn't promise to be a very convincing one.

16.09. (Thu) 21:05 Napoli - Utrecht

Making A Positive Debut

For former Italian champions Napoli, featuring in the group stage of the Europa League is indeed a great achievement as just a few years back the Neapolitans were playing in Serie B. But brighter days are back in Naples and it's now time for the players to take their team to glory in Europe.
Napoli will play their first ever game in the group stage of the Europa League on Thursday when they host Utrecht but have a number of superb players with international experience who will have just victory on their mind.
Furthermore, the Azzurri have won their last four European home games and this will certainly encourage them.

Hoping For A Win

Dutch side FC Utrecht will make their first competitive debut in Italy on Thursday when they face Napoli in Naples. A win shouldn't exactly be on their mind but given that the Italians will be making their Europa League debut there is a chance for a draw.
Utrecht will look to improve on their only previous group stage campaign. They played in the UEFA Cup in 2004-05 and lost all four of their games in the group. Under coach Ton du Chatinier, indeed the Dutch side will aim to be very competitive on Thursday.

TEAM NEWS

Napoli

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): De Sanctis, Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Aronica; Maggio, Pazienza, Gargano, Dossena; Hamsik, Lavezzi; Cavani

Utrecht

Probable Lineup (4-4-2): Vorm, Cornelisse, Schut, Wuytens, Nesu; Maguire, Nijholt, Silberbauer, Lensky; Duplan, Van Wolfswinkel

Prediction
Napoli will win this match by a two-goal margin as they are strong at home and also have a superior team

16.09. (Thu) 21:05 PSV Eindhoven - Sampdoria

Flying High

Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven are doing great so far this season as they are top of the Dutch Eredivisie with 13 points and will be keen to transform their domestic form to the international arena.
PSV will be confident of garnering a win at home as besides having a strong and competitive squad, they also have a very brilliant record in Eindhoven - they have won their last seven European home games.
PSV will know that along with Sampdoria they will be the favourites to progress from this group but must bear in mind that they need to make a winning start on Thursday.

Samp On A Mission

Sampdoria have made a brilliant start to the season in spite of suffering the disappointment of not qualifying for the Champions League. Beaten by German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in the play-off round over both legs, the Genoa-based side have bounced back strongly in Serie A and are currently third with four points from two matches.
"The objective is get through the group, and to do that, it is always best to start off winning because otherwise when you slip behind it is always harder,'' said striker Nicola Pozzi.
"PSV are one of the strongest teams currently in the Eredivisie and I think that it will be very attractive. We will try to take advantage of any opportunities we have.''
"My team showed great character against Juventus (during the 3-3 draw in Turin at the weekend) and that allowed us to take home a positive result,'' added coach Domenico Di Carlo.
"Considering we will play a game every three days, my players have to be smart and find the necessary maturity to deal with the pressure of playing in two competitions.''

TEAM NEWS

PSV

PSV coach Fred Rutten will be without Bulgaria international defender Stanislav Manolev, who has been ruled out for two weeks with a groin injury. However, goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson is likely to start in goal for the Dutch side. However, defender Francisco Javier Rodriguez is suspended.
Probable Lineup(4-3-3): Isaksson, Hutchinson, Marcelo, Bouma, Pieters; Afellay, Toivonen, Engelaar; Lens, Berg, Dzsudzsak,

Sampdoria

Sammarco, Poli, Tissone, Accardi and Guberti are out injured. There are no suspension worries for Samp.
Probable Lineup (4-4-2): Curci, Zauri, Gastaldello, Lucchini, Ziegler; Semioli, Palombo, Dessena, Mannini; Pazzini, Cassano

Prediction
A win for PSV looks likely given Sampdoria's less than impressive record in away games in Europe, but don't count out a scoring draw.

PSV 2-1 Sampdoria

16.09. (Thu) 21:05 Liverpool - Steaua

Reds seek European tonic in front of Kop

After a stuttering start to the domestic campaign, Liverpool should look welcomely at the distraction of a Europa League group stage clash with Steaua Bucharest at Anfield.

An uninspiring goalless draw against Birmingham City precedes Thursday's European clash and in that Premier League fixture, star players Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard were criticised for failing to galvanise their team-mates in a limp display.

However, both stars will be denied redeeming themselves in front of the Kop against the Romanians as manager Roy Hodgson looks to spare his best players the ordeal of an early season slog through the Europa League foothills. That means Torres, Gerrard and even Jamie Carragher are likely to be rested, with new signing Raul Meireles set for a full debut and Joe Cole filling in as he looks to gain fitness upon his return from suspension.

Despite the refreshened player selection, Hodgson will want a good run in the competition after the Reds reached the semi-finals last season, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Atletico Madrid. Hope will be gleamed from the fact that in the only previous meeting between Liverpool and Steaua, during a Uefa Cup tie in 2003-04, the Reds came out on top with a 1-0 win at Anfield after a 1-1 draw in Romania. They can also boast a stretch of 10 unbeaten games in the Uefa Cup/Europa League itself at Anfield.

Returning Giants

Meanwhile, Steaua head into this clash after a solid start to their league campaign. They currently sit in third place after seven games and are level on points with leaders and city rivals Dinamo. New boss Ilie Dumitrescu, club legend and former Spurs and West Ham player, will be hoping to end a barren few years for the most decorated club in the history of Romanian football.

The Romanian giants finished fourth last season but won the last of their record 23 league titles in 2005-06. And the match at Anfield comes at a somewhat difficult spell for the side who have failed to win in their last three matches. Last weekend they were beaten 1-0 at Unirea Urziceni, who Liverpool knocked out of the Europa League at the last 32 stage last season.

However, Steaua have pedigree in Europe and won the European Cup in their halcyon days in 1986 when they beat a Barcelona side managed by Terry Venables 2-0 on penalties after a goalless draw. They followed that up a couple of months later by defeating Dinamo Kiev to lift the European Super Cup. Steaua also reached the 1989 European Cup final but lost 4-0 to AC Milan. These achievements are long in the past though, and any unfounded optimism will be tempered by the fact that the Romanians have never beaten an English side on the road.

TEAM NEWS

Liverpool

New left-back Paul Konchesky should be fit to face Steaua despite failing to last 90 minutes against Birmingham City at the weekend.

Raul Meireles is set for a full debut alongside Joe Cole with Hodgson also giving a chance to youngster Daniel Pacheco.

Daniel Agger is set to return to his favoured position in central defence, while Dirk Kuyt is out with a long-term injury.

Possible starting XI: Reina; Johnson, Kyrgiakos, Agger, Konchesky; Poulsen, Meireles; Pacheco, Cole, Babel; N'Gog.

Steaua Bucharest

Striker Bogdan Stancu is likely to be given the nod to lead the line up front and is the side's leading scorer this season with six goals.

Defender George Galamaz is ineligible, as is left-back Pablo Brandan, and strikers Marius Onofras and Marius Bilasco. All have played in the Champions League qualifiers for Unirea before joining Steaua and are thus ruled out.

Possible starting XI: Lungu; Latovlevici, Alves, Martinovic, Bonfim; Radut, Tanase, Angelov, Vilana, Matei; Stancu.

Prediction
Despite the limp start to their Premier League campaign, Roy Hodgson's team look fairly comfortable in Europe, as though they feel distanced from domestic press criticism. European nights are electric at Anfield, and with the crowd behind them and Joe Cole and new signing Raul Meireles raring to go, the Reds have the attacking prowess to overcome a relatively underwhelming team.

16.09. (Thu) 21:05 Anderlecht - Zenit

Unflinching Domestically

Anderlecht and Zenit St. Petersburg will both feel they should have achieved a spot in the Champions League group stages this week, but instead they face each other in the Europa League, very much the silver medal event of the continent’s calendar.

After earning a 2-2 draw against Partizan in Serbia, the cards seemed to be placed in favour of Anderlecht going into the second leg of their elite level play-off encounter. A brace of goals from Cleo took the Steamroller two goals clear in Belgium, but the home side battled back impressively to force extra-time and ultimately penalties.

It was during the spot kicks that les Mauve et Blanc saw their bottle smash, with three of the highest penalty kicks that will ever be seen at such a level climbing over the bar as they crashed out in thoroughly frustrating circumstances.

Ariel Jacobs’ side have been unflinching domestically, conceding only once in their opening six encounters and opening up a goal difference of plus 12 in the process. They remain only second in the Belgian First League as they have twice been held scoreless. Indeed, in their ten matches in all competition, the Brussels side are unbeaten, and that’s a record they’ll wish to maintain through Thursday night’s difficult clash.

Save Face

That Zenit St. Petersburg are not competing in the Champions League this season is one of the biggest surprises on the European stage. After spending monumentally over the course of the last year – nearly €60 million according to estimates – Luciano Spalletti’s side were not only expected to reach the group phase, they were expected to progress through it.

Going into their second leg fixture against Auxerre, the Sine-Belo-Golubye boasted a 1-0 advantage over the French side and commanded an unbeaten run stretching back an improbable length, yet they crumbled in Burgundy, going down 2-0 and ultimately being reduced to only nine men.

A face saving mission is therefore required in the Europa League, a competition Zenit have already won when it was in the guise of the UEFA Cup little over two years ago.

The St. Petersburg outfit have not allowed their stride to be broken in the RPL, in which they are still the utterly dominant force. Through 18 games of the season they lie six points clear of nearest rivals Rubin Kazan, with two games in hand over the two-time defending champions with which they could extend their advantage.

Spalletti can therefore allow his gaze to be drawn by the continent to some extent, and in a group containing Hajduk Split and AEK Athens, the Italian will want his side to make a positive start to banish the profoundly negative memories of Auxerre.

TEAM NEWS

Anderlecht

Roland Juhasz has had hamstring problems and has undergone an ultrasound scan to try and determine the extent of his problems. He may be available for the match.

Sacha Kljestan and Jan Polak are both back, the latter after missing some training earlier this week to attend the birth of his son in the Czech Republic.

Pier Barrios, Cheikhou Kouyate (who is banned in any case) and Kanu have a pick ‘n’ mix of problems and seem very unlikely to play, while Tom De Sutter, Davy Schollen and Marcin Wasilewski continue to rehabilitate after undergoing operations.

Probable Starting XI:
Proto; Gillet, Bernandez, Juhasz, Deschacht; Marecek, Biglia, Polak; Suarez, Lukaku, Boussoufa

Zenit

Luciano Spalletti has named a strong squad for this encounter, though his panel does not include Aleksandr Bukharov. Igor Denisov is picked on the other hand.

Vyacheslav Malafeev and Tomas Hubocan are both banned after being sent-off against Auxerre. Aleksandr Anyukov is also suspended.

Probable Starting XI:
Zhevnov; Shirokov, Bruno Alves, Lombaerts, Lukovic; Zyryanov, Semak; Bystrov, Danny, Lazovic; Kerzhakov

Prediction
Given the money they’ve spent this summer, Zenit should really approach this match as strong favourites, though Anderlecht aren’t a side used to tasting defeat either, particularly at home. One would imagine the hosts will be more fired up for this encounter than their guests, so look for les Mauve et Blanc to follow in Auxerre’s footsteps and cause something of a minor upset. They may not get the win, but a draw is possible.

Anderlecht 1-1 Zenit

16.09. (Thu) 21:05 Sevilla - Paris Saint Germain

Hot And Cold

Antonio Alvarez’s Sevilla side may be only a month into their competitive campaign but they have already endured something of a rollercoaster ride and will hope to get back on the winning track when they meet Paris Saint-Germain in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Los Nervionenses would have been expecting to turn out in the Champions League this week but were thwarted at the play-off stage by an upstart Braga outfit who look capable of significant achievements at the highest level this term. After losing in Portugal, an incredible 4-3 defeat at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan failed to amuse the home fans as they saw their favourites crash out in lamentable style.

But Sevilla were not in the dumps for too long as they rebounded spectacularly to claim a 4-1 win away over Levante on the opening day of the Primera Division campaign to quickly answer their critics. The up and down start to the season continued at the weekend as the Andalucians tied 0-0 at home with Deportivo La Coruna, looking easily stifled during that fixture.

“I think we were deserving of the victory,” Alvarez argued after the fixture to AS. “Maybe in another game we would have had far less chances and would have still won.”

Already there are starting to be murmurings of discontent amongst the home fans and anything less than a victory against PSG would be considered a massive blow to the coach’s already questionable credibility.

Forget The Problems

Paris Saint-Germain are another club where the support have big expectations of the side deployed onto the field, and Antoine Kombouare has already felt the early-season pinch, having recently seen his men lose three successive games.

Les Parisiens got back on track with an easy success against Arles-Avignon on Saturday, running rampant in a 4-0 victory that did nothing to flatter the home side, who could conceivably had two or three more goals to their credit by full-time. Sevilla, however, are very different beasts to the Ligue 1 debutants.

Even during the weekend’s fixture PSG’s problems were clear, not so much on the field as off it. Relations between the board and the fans are strained to say the least as measures being taken to make the club a more family friendly visit have been greeted with disdain from the clubs traditional fan base. The Parc des Princes was only half full at the weekend, while season ticket sales have been minimal, depriving the club of a valuable income stream.

Last term’s Coupe de France winners have a great deal to do in order to restore credibility to their side in many aspects, and a strong run in the Europa League would certainly boost their tarnished reputation on a continental-wide basis.

TEAM NEWS

Sevilla

Renato limped out of training on Tuesday and a test will be completed on Wednesday to determine whether he can feature or not. Goalkeeper Javi Varas, meanwhile, has a seemingly minor tendon problem in his knee.

Federico Fazio is out due to an ankle complaint, while Julien Escude is banned.

There is some good news as Luca Cigarini is speeding towards a debut imminently as his condition continues to improve.

Some rotation should be expected for this encounter.

Probable Starting XI:
Palop; Dabo, Caceres, Alexis, Navarro; Alfaro, Guarente, Zokora, Capel; Fabiano, Kanoute

PSG

Antoine Kombouare will be minus three players travelling to Andalucia. Central midfielder Mathieu Bodmer is missing due to injury, while right-back Ceara is absent too. Undoubtedly the greatest blow is a knock to offensive midfielder Stephane Sessegnon, which he was expected to overcome but hasn’t.

Jeremy Clement will start, despite being in the midst of a two-game domestic ban.

Generally, PSG rest players in midweek European ties, but such is the reputation that Sevilla command, the likes of veteran Claude Makelele may be given a run-out.

Probable Starting XI:
Edel; Jallet, Camara, Sakho, Tiene; Giuly, Makelele, Clement, Nene; Hoarau, Erding

Prediction
Sevilla should have too much quality going forward for PSG, whose defensive unit is certainly not their strongest suit. Les Parisiens will be dogged, but they don’t have the organisation or discipline that teams such as Deportivo La Coruna can boast, and hence they will slide to a loss.

Sevilla 2-1 PSG
