A Must Win For The Fennecs

While the local Fennecs may have done their country proud during the 2011 African Championship of Nations by reaching the semis and barely losing out on penalties to eventual champions Tunisia, the same certainly can’t be said about the senior side which is in serious danger of not even qualifying for a more important tournament, the 2012 African Cup of Nations. After just two games, the Fennecs find themselves rock bottom in group D despite being tipped as favorites considering their status as World Cup participants and fourth place finishers at Angola 2010.

While their showing in South Africa was rather lackluster, the smart money was still on them and neighbors Morocco battling it out for the sole ticket to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea but, amazingly, the Central African Republic are currently edging the Atlas Lions on goal difference for first place. The Desert Warriors owe their solitary point and lone goal to their first qualifier in Blida where they could only salvage a draw after Tanzania forward Jerson Tegete stunned them and their supporters with a long range free kick. As if dropping points against the Taifa Stars at home wasn’t enough, Abdelhak Ben Chihka’s men followed it up with a more disastrous performance by suffering a 2-0 loss at the hands of “Les Fauves” in Bangui.

Now the Algerians find themselves in a very difficult situation as a loss against a resurgent Morocco will almost certainly take them out of the running for the 2012 AFCON, with three qualifiers left to play… To make matters worse, political uprisings in the north Africa have also worked against them, forcing the FAF to cancel a friendly against Tunisia that would have served as ideal preparation for this crucial matchup. Instead, they come into this one mostly relying on their well-known fighting spirit and vocal fans.

Eric Gerets’ First Real Test

While Moroccan fans knew Eric Gerets was going to lead them for the better part of a year, it hasn’t been long since the former Olympique Marseille coach officially took over the Atlas Lion pride. The Belgian coach was said to have been picking the rosters during the first two qualifiers but his contractual situation with Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia meant that Dominique Cuperly had to coach the side, with mixed results. Much like their upcoming opponents, Morocco started qualifying off on the wrong foot by being held to goalless home draw against the Central African Republic. However, to their credit, they bounced back with a slim but important 1-0 win against Tanzania in Dar-es-Salaam.

When Gerets first arrived, he could only manage a 1-1 away draw against Northern Ireland but he’s since spent a large part of his time recruiting new European born talent such as Younes Belhanda and Mehdi Carcela, while also making it a top priority to unify the team and do away with the divisions that plagued the side during their catastrophic 2010 African and World Cup qualifying campaign. If the most recent 3-0 win against Niger, who famously beat African champs Egypt in qualifying, is anything to go by, then it appears that the Atlas Lions are on the right track.

Nevertheless, downing Niger at home in a friendly and traveling to Annaba for an immensely important qualifier that also doubles as a Maghreb derby are two different things entirely and, thus, this will be considered Gerets’ first real test. A win here would do wonders for his team’s confidence and potentially come very close to eliminating what was thought to be their most dangerous group rivals but a loss will raise the pressure ahead of the return leg in June and also give surprise leaders the Central African Republic a chance to tighten their grip on first place.

TEAM NEWS

Algeria

After being overlooked following his miserable performance in Bangui, the influential Nadir Belhadj is back in the team. It’s unclear if he’ll start or if Ben Chikha will rely on Djamel Mesbah instead. Other returnees are Abdelmalek Ziaya, Abdelkader Ghezzal, and Lazhar Hadj Aissa who benefitted from his impressive CHAN showing. Another recruit from the tournament is ES Setif’s Abdelmoumen Djabou but no one doubts that the player Ben Chikha would have really wanted to be fit for this encounter is Lazio’s Mourad Meghni. Faouzi Chaouchi’s post World Cup exile has also come to an end but M’Bolhi is still expected to start ahead of him. The biggest worry for the coach is Madjid Bougherra’s thigh injury which may rule him out of the encounter.

Squad: Raïs M'Bolhi (PFC Krylia Sovetov), Faouzi Chaouchi (ES Sétif), Mohamed Lamine Zemmamouche (MC Alger), Ismaël Bouzid (Hearts), Nadir Belhadj (Al-Sadd SC), Antar Yahia (VfL Bochum), Carl Medjani (AC Ajaccio), Rabie Meftah (JSM Béjaïa), Madjid Bougherra (Rangers FC), Mehdi Mostefa (Nîmes Olympique), Djamel Mesbah (US Lecce), Djamel Abdoun (Kavala, Grèce), Ryad Boudebouz (FC Sochaux, France), Abdelmoumene Djabou (ES Sétif), Lazhar Hadj Aissa (ES Sétif), Mehdi Lacen (Racing Santander, Espagne), Khaled Lemmouchia (ES Sétif), Hocine Metref (ES Sétif), Hassan Yebda (Naples, Italie), Karim Ziani (Kayserispor, Turquie), Rafik Djebbour (Olympiakos), Abdelkader Ghezzal (AS Bari), Abdelmalik Ziaya (Ittihad Jeddah)

Morocco

A quick look at the Atlas Lions’ roster leaves one in awe of their attacking talent but one player who standous out by his absence is Mounir El Hamdaoui who owes his omission to his tumultuous season at Ajax. Another Moroccan attacker who won’t be available for Eric Gerets is Youssouf Hadji who suffered an adductor injury in training. Meanwhile, Adil Hermach and Hicham Mahdoufi are back in the mix after their respective absences.

Squad: Nadir Lamyaghri (WAC), Badda Issam (FUS), Mohamadina Ahmed, OCK), Mehdi Benatia (Udinese), Hicham Mahdoufi (RCA), Ahmed Kantari (Stade Brestois), Soulaimani Rachid (RCA), Michael Basser (Nancy-Lorraine), Mrani Mustapha (MAS), Mehdi El Karnas (DHJ), Hicham Mahdoufi (RCA), Mohamed Berrabeh (WAC), Mohamed Chihani (MAS), Houssine Kharja (Inter Milan), Younes Belhanda (Montpellier HSC), Mbark Boussoufa (RSC Anderlecht), Adel Taarabt (QPR), Youssouf Hadji (Nancy-Lorraine), Adil Hermach (Lens), Mehdi Carcela (Standard de Liege), Oussama Assaidi (SC heerenveen), Marouane Chamakh (Arsenal), Youssef El Arabi (SM CAEN)

PREDICTION

Even though Morocco are much better prepared for this encounter than their hosts, one can never count out Algeria, especially when they’re playing at home. What’s more, this is a derby and that means that anything can happen. Expect a heated and physical encounter that will start off very tense and then open up as time ticks by, and, hopefully, as the goals add up.

Algeria 2-2 Morocco

27.03. (Sun) 18:30 Nigeria - Ethiopia

Nigeria seek resurrection

It was a crushing blow for Nigeria when they fell to a lone goal defeat by Guinea in Conakry last October. The team under interim coach Austin Eguavoen had suffered in morale after the shameful World Cup performance. They managed a 2-0 victory over minnows Madagascar in Abuja in their first game, but lost the second. Now three points behind leaders Guinea in Group B, the Super Eagles will be looking to resurrect their chances of participating in the Gabon-Equatorial Guinea showpiece next year.

New coach Samson Siasia comes into his first competitive game in charge with the burden of a must-win game. Much hope has been placed on him and he is condemned to deliver.

However, he is facing a crisis with his strikers as three of them are out injured and one ineligible to play. This will surely be a big test for his career as national team coach.

Ethiopia look for an upset

Ethiopia began their qualification campaign with a 4-1 loss at home to group leaders Guinea. And if you thought all was lost, the Antelopes went to Antananarivo where they snatched a precious 1-0 victory over hosts Madagascar.

They know that miracles do happen with persistence in football and they will come to Abuja looking to upset their hosts. They are aware that the Super Eagles are at the beginning of a rebuilding process and they will look to exploit this.

Their Nigerian-born coach Iffy Onuora has been talking in the media and his knowledge will give his lads the psychological strength to enable them to get through the scathing Abuja heat.

TEAM NEWS

Nigeria

Nigeria are not sure of strikers Osaze Odemwingie, Obafemi Martins and Victor Anichebe who all showed up in camp with injuries. The team will also miss the services of Victor Moses, who will no longer be able to make his debut as FIFA declared he is not yet clear to play for Nigeria after wearing English colours at youth level.

Siasia is left with Obinna Nsofor, long-term injury returnee Ike Uche, Peter Utaka and Solomon Okoronkwo to choose from in attack.

Squad

Goalkeepers: Dele Aiyenugba, Sunday Rotimi

Defenders: Chibuzor Okonkwo, Olubayo Adefemi, Taye Taiwo, Elderson Echiejile, Joseph Yobo, Dele Adeleye, Efe Ambrose

Midfielders: John Mikel Obi, Joel Obi, Fengor Ogude, Kalu Uche, Ahmed Musa

Strikers: Osaze Odemwingie, Victor Anichebe, Peter Utaka, Obinna Nsofor, Ikechukwu Uche, Ekigho Ehiosun, Solomon Okoronkwo, Obafemi Martins

Ethiopia

Iffy Onuora has his big strikers Fikru Tefera and Oumed Oukri available for this tie. Tefera, who plays at SuperSport United in South Africa is described as a tireless runner who will give the Nigerian defence a horrid time on Sunday.

Squad

Goalkeepers: Binyam Tefera, Binyam Habtamu, Jemal Tassew

Defenders: Daniel Deribe, Mengistu Assefa, Samson Mulugeta, Tesfaye Bekele

Midfielders: Girma Ashenafi, Tesfaye Alebachew, Shimelis Bekele

Strikers: Umed Ukuri, Tesfaye Tafese, Greg Ngoyi, Fikru Tefera, Yared Zinabu, Adane Girma

PREDICTION

Despite the pressure to perform and provide their home fans with a victory, the three points seem to be well within Nigeria's grasp.

27.03. (Sun) 18:30 Cote D’Ivoire - Benin

How big is a win?

Cote D’Ivoire are top favourites to win Group H, and they have flawlessly upheld that status across the first and second rounds of the 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifying by beating Rwanda 3-0 in Abidjan and humbling the Swallows of Burundi 1-0 in Bujumbura. Who’s next? Benin.

Benin have been matched up against Cote D’Ivoire many times in recent qualifiers, however, the Squirrels are yet to show any improvement, year after year, against the Elephants, who keep crushing them each time they meet.

Naturally, the Ivorian players see few hurdles as they engage the Benin side. Besides the largely favourable previews, the Ivorians want to measure their win in number of goals scored, to perhaps dispense some bliss to the agonizing Ivorian population stuck in an unprecedented political crisis for the last three months. Some players have mentioned this during a press conference in Accra.

The return of Chelsea’s talisman Didier Drogba will surely make a difference. Pundits suggest he intends to inspire the team to an exceptional victory over Benin, somewhat making up for his self-imposed retreat from the outfit since the end of the 2010 World Cup.

The absence of defence minister Manchester City’s Kolo Toure, who’s currently under suspension by his club, will most probably make no difference in the back half against a scattered Benin attacking line, unless they bring something new to show.

The playground this time does not really matter, as both teams are familiar with the Ghanaian environment. No home advantage for any.

Although Cote d’Ivoire seem to be humbly giving the Squirrels some estimations lately, the Elephants deep down are contemplating how big their win will be over the visitors.

A national assignment

Benin are set for the Cote D’Ivoire face-off despite the crisis rocking the Football Federation, which has not only affected the stability of the national team, but also the smooth running of the local league.

There are two FAs in Benin at the moment, one recognized by FIFA, the other enforced by former members of the original Executive Committee, who resigned last December following friction with the standing FA president.

Likewise, there are two national coaches, each appointed by the two opposing FAs. Consequently, there have been two national teams carrying out parallel preparations for the Cote D’Ivoire qualifier, but the Sports Ministry eventually chose to honour the roster presented by one of the coaches Fortuné Glèlè, who’s currently in Accra with his squad.

This situation will surely worsen the composure of the Squirrels, after some of the local members have suffered its consequences in league matches. How will they effectively pull themselves together to confront the giant Ivorian Elephants?

Coach Fortuné Glèlè, supported by the Sports Ministry, is aware of the fact that his mission down to Accra is mere accomplishment of a national assignment and not necessarily the zeal to win a match. The players too know they are not to be blamed for any hazardous eventuality while meeting a potentially strong and well-prepared Cote D'Ivoire team.

Benin are second in the group with 4 points, with hope of contending for the best loser spot if they don’t finish well here.

27.03. (Sun) 15:00 DR Congo - Mauritius

When they were paired in the same group as giants Cameroon and Senegal, DR Congo probably thought they would make a great showing to qualify for next year’s competition to be hosted by their neighbours Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Two matches later and a single point, the Leopards are not looking good enough to make a sixteenth appearance at the continental showpiece.

In this game against whipping boys Mauritius, the Congolese will hope to bring back their chase on a good footing but in fighting between their coaches may just stall any hope of progress that they hope to make.

Mauritius have only ever qualified for the AFCON once in their history in 1974. That long run of failed attempts will definitely continue this year after they lost both of their opening matches to Cameroon and Senegal. They have conceded ten goals and go to Kinshasa knowing that another loss will put paid to their hopes, not that they really had any.

Prediction

This should be an easy one for the Leopards in front of their home fans but they would be making a grave mistake if they think that Team M will not give them a good fight.

DR Congo 2-1 Mauritius

LAST MEETING

June 10, 1998: Brazil 2-1 Scotland

Brazil ran out winners at the Stade de France in Group A of the 1998 World Cup. The Samba Boys took the lead in the fourth minute with a goal from Cesar Sampaio, but Scotland hit back through a John Collins penalty. They held on for 73 minutes before a Tom Boyd own goal gave Brazil the three points.

Scotland: McGregor; Whittaker, Caldwell, Wilson, Crainey; Snodgrass, Adam, Bannan, Commons; Miller, Naismith.

Prediction
This should be an open contest and one Scotland will relish, but the Brazilians should have too much fire-power for Craig Levein's side and despite being pushed hard they should run out with a victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Brazil 3-1 Scotland
