GAME OF THE WEEK | VELEZ SARSFIELD vBOCA JUNIORS |
An absolutely unmissable fixture to look forward to on Sunday evening, and one which could well confirm unbeaten Boca as Apertura champions if they can take down the holders in Liniers.
The Xeneixe's on-field heroics have been accompanied with no little strife away from the pitch. First-team certainties such as Riquelme, Clemente Rodriguez and Walter Erviti are all out injured, while in the stands the threat of a battle between rival hooligans means that just 2000 hand-picked fans will be able to witness the game from the away end.
Velez, meanwhile, faced a tough Copa Sudamericana clash on Thursday evening against Libertad, and with no chance of winning the league could choose to rest certain first-teamers. They are still a formidable prospect at home though, and Boca will have to be at their best to record a vital three points.
Prediction: A lot depends on the side that the Fortin put out for this clash, but the idea of losing to Boca in front of their own fans should ensure a fairly strong XI. Two tough teams face off, with the likely result a tense 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.
FRIDAY |
The first of four days of weekend action kicks off with struggling Independiente, who travel to Floresta and All Boys on the back of one win in five matches. Ramon Diaz has promised major changes to try and find the winning formula, with Hernan Fredes one of four new faces expected to start.
Second-placed Rafaela will then hope to bounce back from defeat with three points against fellow new boys Belgrano, before San Lorenzo face a must-win relegation clash away to Olimpo, in which a defeat could prove the end of coach Omar Asad.
SATURDAY |
Always stronger away from home than in their own stadium, Colon will be confident travelling to Tigre- having picked up 14 out of 21 points on the road, compared to just six from 18 in the Elephant's Graveyard.
Apertura 2010 winners Estudiantes then face a tough test in Mendoza, as they take on league top scorers Godoy Cruz. The Pincha are joint-bottom of the table, and will be desperate to record their third win of the season. Perennial drawers Racing Club finish off the day's action; after five straight deadlocks, Diego Simeone's men are under pressure to cut short the run at home to Argentinos Juniors.
SUNDAY |
Aside from Boca's visit to Liniers, there are two more games for viewers to enjoy on Sunday; with two clasicos kicking off simultaneously in the afternoon.
Lanus and Banfield meet each other in the Clasico del Sur, one of only three 'traditional' derbies left in Primera after Racing-Independiente and Union-Colon.
The teams' fortunes have contrasted sharply in this tournament, but hosting their rivals Ricardo La Volpe's Banfield will hope for an upset in front of their own fans, and to lift themselves off the foot of the standings. One man who will miss out though is Mauro Camoranesi: the former Banfield trainee escapes from a rough reception from his old fans due to a lengthy suspension for violent play.
Union also host Newell's Old Boys, a match which pits two of the four teams from Santa Fe province against each other. Newell's in particular will want a positive result, after a week marred by video footage that showed a Rosario mounted policeman battering a prostrate fan in ugly scenes at home to Arsenal.
MONDAY |
Given a delayed kick-off due to Thursday's Sudamericana commitments against Universidad de Chile,Arsenal de Sarandi finish off the 14th round by hosting San Martin de San Juan. The away side are unbeaten in three matches, but still find themselves in direct relegation and need to continue picking up points to avoid a swift return to the Nacional B next June.
