10-11-2010 20:45 Milan - Palermo

Top Spot Beckons

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has defined the match against Palermo at San Siro on Wednesday evening as “the most important game” of the season and he does have a point. Stationed second in the table, the Rossoneri have the Milan derby against Inter at the weekend and win against the Sicilians will not only boost their confidence ahead of the match against the Italian and European champions, it could also propel them to pole position in the table.

Milan are just two points behind league leaders Lazio and bounced back from their last week’s draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League with a narrow 3-2 win against Bari in Serie A at the weekend.
Allegri has hinted that he could recall some of the players for this match and also recognises the class that ambitious Palermo possesses.

The former Cagliari coach said, "Palermo will arrive in Milan with a different spirit from what they had before the match against Genoa.

"When teams come to play at the San Siro they are always inspired. Milan will respect them. It will be the most important game we have played so far this season because it arrives just before the derby.

"It will be crucial not only in terms of our place in the table, but also as preparation for the derby.''

Invoking Last Season’s Spirit

Palermo will try to invoke the spirit of last season when they defeated Milan at San Siro. The Sicilians won 1-0 against Genoa at the weekend to end a sequence of three defeats in all competitions.

This win also means that Palermo are eighth in the league standings with 14 points from 10 matches, four points behind fourth-placed Juventus. The Sicilians are still in the hunt for a place in the top four and a victory over Milan on Wednesday evening will be very important in that.

However, coach Delio Rossi is urging caution ahead of the clash with the former Italian and European champions and said, "Milan and Palermo this year have different teams than last, there are different players and formations. But we arrive on the back of a good performance, which was not completely obvious in the scoreline, but the team played well.

"Despite the defeats beforehand we had been playing at a good level, except in Udine, so the players have the knowledge that we are doing well.

"This team may have a thousand faults but they will always honour the jersey.''

TEAM NEWS

Milan

Bonera, Oddo and Zambrotta are out because of injuries. Gattuso is suspended for this fixture. Allegri could deploy 4-3-1-2 formation that will see Ronaldinho start ahead of Robinho in the trequartista role. Pato and Ibrahimovic will be the two strikers upfront.

Palermo

Liverani and Hernandez are unavailable because of injuries. Delio Rossi is likely to start with Miccoli upfront alongside Pinilla with Pastore just behind them in a 4-3-1-2 system.

Prediction
This promises to be a hugely promising match as both sides have some fascinating players. Moments of magic will be replete and one such moment is likely to be decisive. Palermo have looked good away from home but Milan should edge past them in the end.

10-11-2010 20:45 Roma - Fiorentina

Picking Up From Derby Win

Roma’s season has been pretty much inconsistent but their 2-0 win against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday was no fluke. The Lupi’s victory in the Rome derby was their second in a row in the league and third in all competitions.

The win also puts Claudio Ranieri’s team in seventh place on 15 points, just three behind Juventus, who are fourth. The Scudetto may just be out of reach but a place in the top four is not.

Ranieri remains hopeful of carrying on their run and maintaining the momentum and said, "We are overcoming a difficult time. We had problems at the start of the season but we are going in the right direction.

"I'm very happy for all the Roman fans that have stood by us in difficult times. Against Lazio, we played with intelligence and the team is improving.

"Now we must beat Fiorentina to make it three wins in a row.''

Recovery In Full Flow

Fiorentina’s rejuvenation is in full swing as the Viola won at the weekend, narrowly defeating Chievo 1-0 in Florence. It extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to four matches and pushed them up to 11th in the table.

Fiorentina currently have 12 points from ten matches and are just a win away from a Europa League spot. Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side may just have turned the corner after a disappointing start to the campaign.

However, the Viola have a massive task on their hands in Rome as they have not won in the league away from Florence for almost nine months now. Furthermore, Roma have yet to lose at the Stadio Olimpico this season.

TEAM NEWS

Roma

Juan, Okaka, Taddei and Pizarro are out because of injuries and Cassetti is suspended. Totti returns to the team after missing the weekend’s Rome derby against Lazio and will start alongside Borriello in attack.

Fiorentina

Frey, Montolivo, Jovetic, Zanetti, Felipe and Babacar are injured for the trip to Rome. Gilardino will de deployed as the lone striker with Marchionni, Mutu and Vargas as the three attacking midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 system.

Prediction
Roma are starting to look good again while Fiorentina are also picking up points. The derby win against Lazio was a massive victory both in terms of league position and psychologically – Roma will win comfortably against the Viola.

10-11-2010 21:00 Everton - Bolton Wanderers

History Repeating

The refrain is similar one from the Everton support. Summer optimism crushed by a lacklustre start to the campaign, Moyes then works his magic at the on-set of winter to set his ship on an even keel once more.

The weekend stalemate with Blackpool has continued the Merseysiders' steady march up the table after they sat bottom as late as September 26. Since tasting victory for the first time this season on October 2, the Toffees have gained all three points from the subsequent pair of matches at Goodison Park.

Since the 4-0 thrashing at the ground in December 2005, Moyes has watched as his troops have dispatched Bolton with ease. Another victory on Wednesday night should propel Everton right into the mix for the Europa League qualifying spots.

High Flyers

Bolton have never been as high as sixth place in the table since the heady days of Sam Allardyce in the middle part of last decade. While that team was laced with top draw performers such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Fernando Hierro and Youri Djorkaeff, Coyle's charges are from much humbler stock.

This didn't stop them dispatching a Spurs side fresh from thrashing Champions League holders Inter. Coyle's side play a hybrid system that brims with the flair from his Burnley days but not without a trace of Allardyce's graft.

This mixture was highlighted against Tottenham when the hosts fired in 18 attempts on goal to 11 and won the foul count 13 to nine.

A run of just one loss in their last seven games tells the story of a club rejuvenated. Everton should be aware that Bolton have no plans to drop down the standings.

TEAM NEWS

Everton

Toffees manager David Moyes has no fresh injury concerns after the pulsating 2-2 weekend draw with Blackpool.

Marouane Fellaini's quicker than expected return from a hamstring tear will see him back in contention at the end of this month. Fellow midfielder Leon Osman is reported to be set for a comeback during the festive fixtures.

Possible starting XI: Howard;
Neville, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Coleman, Heitinga, Arteta, Cahill, Pienaar; Yakubu.

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton supremo Owen Coyle will be keen to maintain the momentum generated from Saturday's 4-2 victory against Tottenham. The match saw Martin Petrov grab a goal after being absent for the previous defeat to Liverpool with a hamstring strain.

Coyle will still be without long-term absentees Ricardo Gardner, Sean Davis, Joey O'Brien and Jlloyd Samuel.

Possible starting XI: Jaaskelainen; Steinsson, Cahill, Knight, Robinson; Lee, Muamba, Holden, Petrov; Elmander, Davies.

10-11-2010 20:45 Aston Villa - Blackpool

Villa desperately need results

Aston Villa started the season by conceding an own goal of sorts when Martin O’Neill left the club after a disagreement with owner Randy Lerner. And the subsequent appointment of Gerard Houllier and the uncertainty surrounding his reign during the first few days did nothing to ease the problems at the Birmingham-based club.

But the squad is slowly coming together under the Frenchman, with evidence in the form of a good performance against Fulham at Craven Cottage over the weekend.

But performances don’t count for anything unless the team gets the right result, and that has not quite been happening for Villa.

Their last victory in the league came in September, against Wolves, when Stewart Downing and Emile Heskey ensured victory at Molineux. But it has been a rocky road since, as Houllier’s charges have gone five games without registering a win.

Add to this the striker crisis with Agbonlahor, Carew and Heskey all sidelined, the gaffer has some cause for concern ahead of a match that would have been chalked down as a certain victory when the fixture list was announced.

Push for survival continues

Blackpool are in their maiden season in the Premier League, and survival will be the objective despite currently resting in the comfort of a mid-table position.

Ideally, manager Ian Holloway would take the table as it stands, which may even be a fair reflection on the performances put in by his charges. But there is still a long way to go before the end of the season, and there could be many a slip up between now and then.

The Seasiders have been fantastic on their travels, notching up three victories – which is more than any other team in the bottom half of the table. The win over Liverpool at Anfield was a real feather in Holloway’s cap, as his side capitalised on the Reds’ poor form to take away three points on their trip to Merseyside.

Now the boss will likely hope for something similar when his side make the trip to Villa Park, as the hosts have gone five games without a win.

TEAM NEWS

Aston Villa

Gerard Houllier has some selection issues after Nigel Reo-Coker (knee) sustained an injury during the recent draw with Fulham. And the problems are compounded due to skipper Stiliyan Petrov (knee) being sidelined as well.

Barry Bannan could keep his place in the starting line-up after a strong performance at Craven Cottage, while Ciaran Clark could also start.

Stephen Ireland and Steve Sidwell could be gunning for starting roles, but the French boss could be in line to keep his faith in his young players.

The injuries to Gabriel Agbonlahor (groin), John Carew (calf) and Emile Heskey (knee) means that Nathan Delfouneso should start again.

Possible starting XI: Friedel; L Young, Collins, Dunne, Warnock; Bannan, Clark; Downing, A Young, Albrighton; Delfouneso.

Blackpool

Billy Clarke and Alex Baptiste (both knee) remain sidelined, while veteran forward Brett Ormerod is still doubtful of making this encounter.

Manager Ian Holloway recently maintained that he would rotate his squad due to games being in quick succession, and the manager could tinker with his line-up to manage fatigue or to prevent any potential injuries.

Possible starting XI: Gilks; Eardley, Cathcart, Evatt, Crainey; Vaughan, Southern, Adam; Harewood, Campbell, Grandin.

Prediction
Aston Villa are finally coming together as a team and could notch up a victory to resurrect a season that has not gone as planned.
