Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has to make do without several players due to injury. Anderson (knee), Tom Cleverley (ankle), Rio Ferdinand (foot), Darren Fletcher (illness), Michael Owen (thigh) and Nemanja Vidic (knee) are all sidelined.

Ashley Young also joins the list of those missing, after he was stretchered off during the 5-0 victory over Fulham. Darron Gibson is also a doubt for the Lactics visit, yet Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Phil Jones has recovered from a facial injury sustained at Craven Cottage in time for the Boxing Day clash.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez does not have a lengthy injury list to deal with, as Emmerson Boyce and Chris Kirkland (both back) are the only two players in his squad who are unavailable through injury.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Manchester United have lost only one game in the Premier League this season, which came in the 6-1 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
  • The Red Devils have won every game they have played against the Latics throughout the course of their history. This accounts for 13 victories, 12 of which came in the Premier League. The other was the 4-0 League Cup final victory in 2006.
  • During this time, Sir Alex Ferguson's men have put 41 goals past this opposition, conceding only four in the process.
  • Wigan have scored only six goals away from home in the Premier League this season. Only Fulham have hit the back of the net fewer times on their travels.
  • In all top-flight games this season, the visitors have scored only 15 goals. No team has scored fewer.
  • The Latics have lost only one of their last six league games, a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal at the DW Stadium, but still lie in the relegation zone.
Prediction
Despite problems in defence, Sir Alex Ferguson's men have enough in their locker to get a positive result against the Latics, particularly on home turf.

West Brom will have to contend without Steven Reid after the defender picked up an injury against Newcastle and Billy Jones will be expected to slot straight into the right-back position. Somen Tchoyi will return to the squad after having time off to spend time with his wife and newborn child. Man City rotated the squad for their win over Stoke and will be expected to change it up once more when they travel to The Hawthorns. Micah Richards, Aleksandar Kolarov and Edin Dzeko are Mancini’s main injury worries though the club's quality in depth should see them through with Zabaleta, Clichy and Balotelli all expected to come in.
DID YOU KNOW?
  • The last time the two sides met at The Hawthorns, Manchester City ran out 2-0 winners with Mario Balotelli scoring both for the visitors.
  • West Brom have enjoyed better success away from home this season with four of their six wins all coming away from the Hawthorns.
  • In the last 10 meetings between the sides West Brom have won five to Man City’s three.
  • In past meetings between the two sides in the Premier League, there has never been a red card.
  • West Brom have never been awarded a penalty against Man City in the Premier League whilst City have had three against the Baggies.
  • West Brom will be looking to make it three consecutive Premier League wins with a victory over Man City following successes over Newcastle and Blackburn.
  • Man City are the top scorers in the Premier League this season having not failed to find the back of the net in a single game.
  • Aston Villa winger Mark Albrighton scored the Premier League’s 20,000 goal against Arsenal in their last game, pipping Man City’s Sergio Aguero to the accolade by just 90 seconds.
  • Adam Johnson has started just 11 games for Man City this season but has scored 6 times whilst also picking up five assists.
Prediction
West Brom are in good form right now but you just can’t see past the Premier League leaders at this moment. Roberto Mancini has options in abundance and in this busy Christmas period he will have a fresher squad than his counterpart Roy Hodgson.

Liverpool suffered yet another disappointing draw, their sixth of the campaign, in their last outing against Wigan Athletic which could prompt a reshuffle up top in this fixture.

Forward Craig Bellamy did not start in the stalemate at the DW - being unable to feature from the beginning of consecutive games due to knee problems - but is a key man in the Reds attack when able to do so.

Andy Carroll has endured a spell on the sidelines spanning three league games and could well return to provide physicality against a side who have recently been woeful in defence. Despite being handed an eight-game ban, Luis Suarez will be able to play as he still has time to contest the charge.

Rovers boss Steve Kean bemoaned his side’s luck with injuries at the back after defeat to relegation rivals Bolton but could well be boosted by the return of Martin Olsson at left-back.

This would mean a more familiar role for Morten Gamst-Pedersen on the left side of midfield, possibly at the expense of Simon Vukcevic and with Mauro Formica moving inside. Scott Dann is out with a ruptured testicle while Michel Salgado is not expected to start after revealing the club have given him several days off as they cannot afford to pay him if he plays more games and thus triggers a clause in his contract entitling him to a new deal.
DID YOU KNOW?

  • Liverpool’s home goals tally is superior to just three other sides in the league – West Brom, QPR and Merseyside rivals Everton.
  • The Reds have notched the highest number of home Premier League draws so far this season with five.
  • Blackburn are one of two sides yet to register a single win away from home this season, the other is Swansea.
  • Kenny Dalglish spent four years managing Blackburn Rovers, leading them to the Premier League title in 1994/95, only the club’s third English championship win.
  • A win in this fixture would take Dalglish’s win ratio in his second spell at Liverpool to 53.3 per cent, higher than the 52.6% he enjoyed during his reign at Blackburn.
  • Both managers are Glasgow-born and began their playing careers at Celtic.
  • This fixtures marks the 45th game of both managers' spells at their respective clubs.
  • Blackburn have not won a Premier League fixture at Anfield since the 1993/94 season when Liverpudlian Mike Newell scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.
Prediction
Given Liverpool’s problems netting at home and penchant for drawing at Anfield it is perhaps tempting to plump for that result here.
However, they face a side with the league’s joint-worst defensive record away from home and might just fancy their chances of seriously improving their ‘goals for’ tally.
The possible return of just one defender to the Blackburn back four will do little to alleviate worries over the potentially costly inexperience of Jason Lowe and Grant Hanley.
Thus the intelligence and experience of the Liverpool frontline is likely to prove too much for a frail defence and could heap more misery on beleaguered Rovers manager Kean.

David Luiz faces a race to be fit for Chelsea. His return would be a timely boost, given the injury Branislav Ivanovic sustained in the Blues' draw with Tottenham on Thursday - Jose Bosingwa may be forced to fill in at centre-back if the Brazilian is not passed fit. In midfield, manager Andre Villas-Boas will choose between Frank Lampard and Raul Meireles. Oriol Romeu is likely to come in for John Obi Mikel, who also picked up a knock during the Tottenham match. Michael Essien remains sidelined.
Fulham manager Martin Jol has been fairly consistent in his team selection in recent weeks and looks set to continue with striker Bobby Zamora out of the starting line-up. Chris Baird could be replaced by Stephen Kelly at right-back after being substituted against Manchester United.
DID YOU KNOW?
  • Chelsea have faced Fulham 74 times in all competitions since the two sides first met in 1910. The Blues have dominated the match-up, their 42 wins dwarfing the Cottagers’ total of nine victories.
  • Andre Villas-Boas’ side held on with 10 men to draw 0-0 before winning on penalties in the League Cup in September when the two teams last met.
  • The highest scoring encounter between the two teams came in the 1983/84 season in what was then the Football League Division Two (now the Championship). On that occasion, Chelsea secured a 5-3 victory at Craven Cottage.
  • John Terry (pictured right) and John Obi Mikel give the ball away less than any other Chelsea player, with both maintaining a 91.6 per cent pass success rate.
  • Chelsea have collected the most yellow cards in the Premier League so far this season, with the current total at 41.
  • Despite their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester United on Wednesday, Fulham have been in reasonable form in recent weeks. They have won two, drawn two and lost two in their last six, a pace that over a full season would likely put them in the top half.
  • That run has included not only Manchester United but also matches against top four contenders Liverpool and Arsenal.
  • Fulham have won four out of the five Premier League games in which Clint Dempsey has scored this season.
  • Steve Sidwell and Damien Duff are former Chelsea players in the Fulham squad but the former is injured and the latter is unlikely to start on Boxing Day having fallen out of favour in recent weeks.
  • Chelsea fans will have fond memories of Fulham defender John Arne Riise – the left-back headed in an own goal in injury time of the 2007-08 Champions League semi-final first leg while playing for Liverpool, tipping the tie in the Blues’ favour.
Prediction
Fulham have been tight defensively away from home, conceding only nine goals in eight matches – less than the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal – but they have only scored four and won once.
Chelsea have not been troubled by a mid-table club at home yet this season, and they shouldn’t be here, although the visitors will be determined to improve on the five they shipped to Manchester United.
Editor's Prediction
Chelsea 2-0 Fulham
