England - Championship Preview Matches


Norwich City v Watford
  • Watford have won four of their last six games against Norwich, drawing one and losing the other.
  • There has only been one goalless draw in the last 56 meetings in all competitions between these two sides (in February 1988).
  • Watford have won only one of their last nine opening day league fixtures, losing six.
  • The Hornets ended a run of 16 away games without a win in the Championship with a 4-0 win at Coventry on the last day of the 09/10 season.
  • Norwich scored in all 23 of their league away games last season.



Bristol City v Millwall
  • There has not been an away win in the last nine games between these sides in all competitions: seven home wins and two draws.
  • The Robins are unbeaten in nine home games against Millwall in all competitions.
  • Nicky Maynard was joint-top scorer in the Championship last season with 20 goals.
  • This includes six goals in his last five league appearances at Ashton Gate.
  • City have won three of their last four home games in the league.
  • Millwall are without a win in their last three league games away from the New Den.



Burnley v Nottingham Forest
  • In 2008/09 Burnley won both of their meetings with Forest, 5-0 at home and 2-1 away.
  • Only one of the last eight meetings between these sides has ended level, four wins for Burnley and three for Forest.
  • Forest are without a win in their last 10 away league games.
  • Forest dropped just four points from winning positions last season in the Championship, a joint-low.
  • Had only home form counted in the Premier League last season, the Clarets would have finished 15th.



Coventry City v Portsmouth
  • Recently-relegated Pompey are unbeaten in five games against Coventry in all competitions, winning three of these.
  • Portsmouth have won their last two matches at Coventry in all competitions, ending a run of five straight defeats there.
  • Coventry went 11 games without a win in the league at the end of last season, the second-longest run in the Championship all season, dropping from 8th to 19th.
  • The Sky Blues dropped more points from winning positions (23) than any other side in the Championship last season.
  • Pompey only lost two of their last six league matches of 2009/10.



Crystal Palace v Leicester City
  • Palace have failed to score in four of their last five meetings with Leicester in all competitions.
  • The Eagles have netted twice in four of their last five home games against the Foxes in all tournaments.
  • Palace netted only six goals in the final 15 minutes of Championship games last season, fewer than any other team.
  • The Eagles' last three league games of 09/10 ended in a draw.
  • Palace picked up fewer points at home (19) than any side in the Championship last season.
  • The Foxes won their last five league games last season.



Hull City v Swansea
  • Hull are unbeaten in four home games against Swansea, winning three of them.
  • Last season the Swans were the lowest-scoring Championship side (40 goals) but finished just one point outside of the play-off spots.
  • Swansea have not scored twice in a league away match since 19th December.
  • The Tigers won only one of their last 13 league games last season.
  • Hull failed to score in their last three home games of 2009/10.


Middlesbrough v Ipswich Town
  • These sides have met 50 times in the league before this match and it has only ended goalless on two occasions.
  • No side scored more goals in the opening 15 minutes of Championship games last season than Ipswich (13).
  • Middlesbrough are unbeaten at the Riverside Stadium in the league since December 2009.
  • Ipswich had to wait 14 games for their first league win of 2009/10.



Preston North End v Doncaster Rovers
  • Both league meetings between these sides last year ended in 1-1 draws.
  • Preston are unbeaten in eight meetings with Doncaster in all competitions, winning four and drawing four of these games.
  • At Sheffield United, Billy Sharp averaged 0.14 goals per league game, compared to 0.62 per game elsewhere (Rushden & Diamonds, Scunthorpe and Doncaster).
  • Preston's last three league wins at Deepdale have come after they have scored at least three times.
  • Rovers have lost just one of their last seven league games on the road.
  • Since the second tier changed its name to the Championship in 2004-05, Preston have picked up more points than any other team in the division.



QPR v Barnsley
  • QPR have won their last seven home games against Barnsley, conceding just three goals in the process and netting 17 themselves.
  • Barnsley have not won at QPR since 1950, a run of 20 league games.
  • The Hoops have drawn four of their last six Championship opening-day matches.
  • QPR's last four league games have ended 1-0 (two wins, two defeats).
  • The Tykes ended 2009/10 without a win in their last 10 league games.



Reading v Scunthorpe United
  • The last four meetings between these sides have ended level and none of the last six have seen a home win.
  • There have only been nine goals scored in the last seven games at Reading between these teams.
  • The Royals' last two opening day fixtures in the Championship have ended goalless.
  • Had only matches from the start of January counted in the Championship last season, Reading would have finished third.
  • Scunthorpe (52) shipped more goals away from home last season than any other team in the Championship.


Leeds United v Derby County
  • Derby have won their last three games against Leeds in all competitions, conceding just one goal in the process.
  • Derby's win in their last meeting with Leeds at Elland Road in 2006 ended a winless run of 17 matches away to United.
  • United have won their last six opening day league fixtures.
  • The Rams have won only one of their last 10 games away from home in the league.
  • Leeds picked up just 30 points from their 23 games after the 1st January 2010, compared to 56 from 23 games before the New Year.
  • However the Whites have won their last three league matches at Elland Road.



Cardiff City v Sheffield United
  • Last season these two sides managed to score nine goals between them in their two league meetings, five of those goals came in the five minutes leading up to half time.
  • There has only been one home victory in the last eight encounters between these outfits.
  • Peter Whittingham was joint-top scorer in the Championship last season with 20 goals.
  • Cardiff hit 56% of their league goals last season in the first half, a higher proportion than any other side.
  • The Bluebirds have won three of their last four opening-day fixtures.
  • Defeat on the last day of the season ended a run of 10 games unbeaten for Cardiff in the 2009/10 Championship.
  • Richard Cresswell scored in four of United's last five games of 2009/10.
