06-11-2010 22:00 Espanyol - Malaga

Keep It Up

Espanyol’s start to the Primera Division could be described as little but positive, though there was a significant set-back for Mauricio Pochettino’s side last weekend when they were easily dispatched by Deportivo La Coruna, and if they don’t want to lose momentum then they must pick up maximum points against a Malaga side who have had a managerial change this week.

Los Periquitos have been a little two faced at the start of the season, romping to four home victories in succession but struggling on the road, where they’ve picked up only three points and have suffered some heavy losses, including last weekend’s reverse at the Riazor. Thankfully for the Catalans, they are at home on Saturday.

Last Sunday’s performance was a thoroughly miserable showing from the Barcelona outfit, who have at least been competitive for spells of their previous trips. On this occasion they were hopeless, though at least they stayed in contention until the final 15 minutes of the game, when the hosts would strike twice.

Pochettino won’t be especially concerned about the home-away split of his side’s form, as it is not a new phenomenon, though of course it is an issue he will wish to remedy. Over the course of last season Espanyol were difficult to beat at the Cornella-El Prat, but were rather easier pickings on the road. They’ve yet to draw this season and they’ve also yet to suffer back-to-back losses, so expect the Blanquiblaus to respond strongly.

Not Smelling Of Roses

Malaga’s beginning to the season has been thoroughly depressing. After being bought in the summer by a member of the Qatari royal family, there were genuine hopes that the Andalucian club could push into a comfortable mid-table position. Rumours of relatively big stars joining los Boquerones never materialised, and the most high profile addition was arguably coach Jesualdo Ferreira.

Little more than two months into the season, the former Porto boss was unceremoniously jettisoned to be replaced by ex-Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini, whose greatest crime at the Bernabeu was being unable to usurp a Barcelona side in record-breaking form. The Chilean, who previously enjoyed a highly successful spell with Villarreal, arrives at La Rosaleda with a point to prove but plenty of work to do.

Almost from the outset the southerners have been a disaster. Away victories over Zaragoza, in which a stunning display early in the game had Ferreira’s men 5-0 up only to be pegged back to 5-3, and Getafe did give some hope, but a 2-1 reverse against Real Sociedad on Monday evening proved to be the last straw as far as the board were concerned.

Pointless at home this season, at least Malaga have been going rather better on their travels, though a 3-0 loss away to Osasuna a fortnight ago was rather symptomatic of their alarming decline. A trip to an Espanyol side so reliable in front of their home fans is by no means the easiest introduction to life with los Boquerones for their new boss.
TEAM NEWS

Espanyol

Aldo Duscher faces a lay-off of between two and three weeks after picking up a muscular problem in training this week. This comes as a blow to the hosts, for he has been a regular in their starting XI this season. Javi Chica won’t play either due to tendonitis.

Ernesto Galan is still out with a broken leg, though he is making slow progress to a return to the field, while there are doubts over Javi Marquez (inflammation of the big toe).

Ivan de la Pena and Felipe Mattioni remain sidelined.

Malaga

Albert Luque will miss the weekend’s clash in Barcelona, though a serious injury has been ruled out for the former Newcastle United and Ajax attacker.

Jose Rondon faces a month out of the game due to a problem in his quadriceps, while Ruben Martinez is the only other player sidelined.

Prediction
Sides can have something of a ‘bounce’ when they appoint a new coach, freshly invigorated and with something new to prove. Malaga won’t have an easy task at the Cornella-El Prat, where Espanyol will be looking to get back to winning ways after their heavy loss last weekend. The Barcelona club are generally found to be very solid at home, so it would be a surprise if their guests were to take anything.

06-11-2010 18:00 Bologna - Lecce

Struggling For Survival

Bologna are second from bottom in Serie A at the moment with just eight points from nine matches. Encouragingly for the Felsinei, there are three other sides with as many points as them.

However, Bologna are in a wretched run of form at the moment and cannot afford to drop any more points if they want to make things better for themselves soon. Last weekend they went down 2-0 to Cagliari in Sardinia and have yet to win in the league since late September.

Interestingly, Alberto Malesani’s side have yet to lose at home this campaign, having won one and drawn the other three league fixtures they have played at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

Safe But Only For Now

Of the three promoted sides in Serie A this season, Lecce seem to be doing the best. At the moment they are 12th in the league standings with 11 points from nine matches.

Lecce lost 2-0 to Roma in Rome last weekend but prior to that they had won two games in a row in all competitions. But the Lupi have a torrid away form – they have yet to register a victory on their travels, having lost four of the five matches.

Furthermore, Lecce are just three points above the relegation zone and could be sucked into the mire if they don’t remain cautious to their situation.

TEAM NEWS

Bologna

Esposito is out injured for the home side, who are likely to line up in a 4-4-2 formation with Meggiorini and Di Vaio as the two strikers.

Lecce

Reginiussen and Fabiano are unavailable because of injuries and Olivera is suspended.

Prediction
This is a tough game to call as both sides know the significance of this relegation six-pointer. It could either way and it wouldn’t be a surprise if it ends in a draw.

Bologna 1-1 Lecce

06-11-2010 16:00 Blackpool - Everton

Toffees Coming To The Boil

October provided a good month for David Moyes' team. Following a less than impressive start to the season, the Toffees recorded three wins out of four in the month of October, including a 2-0 win over rivals Liverpool.

The upturn in Everton's fortunes has dragged them from the lower echelons of the Premier League to being in touching distance of Roberto Manicini's cash giants Manchester City.

Moyes will be hoping his side can continue their upward trajectory at Bloomfield Road on Saturday as they face an attacking Blackpool side buoyed by a victory over Premier League dark horses West Brom on Monday night.

The Tangerines sit in ninth in the Premier League, level on points with David Moyes' side, following an impressive start to the season for the side derided by many as relegation certainties.

After a spirited defeat against Manchester City and wins over both Liverpool and Newcastle, manager Ian Holloway is still adamant that his side have to remain focussed on just avoiding relegation until 40 points have been amassed.

Tangerines Buoyed By Home Win

On Monday night Blackpool recorded their first Premier League home win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Roberto Di Matteo's West Brom.

The victory marked the end of a poor run of four defeats in five games as well as the more historic factor of the Seasiders gaining their first top flight win on home soil since 1971.

That victory in 1971 came agaisnt Crystal Palace as the men in Tangerine cruised to a 3-1 win in the April of that year.

Following the win over West Brom, Blackpool defender Ian Evatt has spoken of the extra confidence that the win has instilled into the Blackpool side, allowing them to approach the Everton game without the burden of needing to record a first home win.

"We've got the monkey off our back and we can now go into the game full of confidence," Evatt told the Blackpool Gazette.

The centre-back also shared his belief that the side can record back to back home wins against David Moyes' side on Saturday.

"Hopefully we can get another three points," he concluded.

TEAM NEWS

Blackpool

Ian Holloway's attacking side have no fresh injury worries for the visit of David Moyes' Everton to Bloomfield Road.

Defender and occasional defensive midfielder Alex Baptiste will miss out with a lengthy knee injury, although the Tangerines are yet to announce a comeback date for the former Mansfield player.

The only other worry for Holloway is the long term injury sustained by young Irish striker Billy Clarke at the start of the Premier League season. Clarke, who is set to return towards the end of the campaign in May, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the summer.

Possible starting XI: Gilks; Eardley, Cathcart, Evatt, Crainey; Grandin, Adam, Vaughan; Taylor-Fletcher, Campbell, Varney.

Everton
The Goodison Park side have improved their form coming into this north west encounter but will find themselves without two important midfielders as they aim to defeat Blackpool.

Both Leon Osman and the Belgian Marouane Fellaini are set to return from ankle and hamstring injuries later in November.

A boost for David Moyes, however, will be the fact that the long term injury to promising midfielder Jack Rodwell should have run it's course by the end of November as the England U-21 international looks to recover from an ankle injury.

Possible starting XI: Howard; Neville, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Coleman, Heitinga, Arteta, Pienaar; Cahill; Yakubu.

Prediction
David Moyes' men should have too much for this Blackpool side as the quality of their midfield, featuring the likes of Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill, will be able to assert themselves on the affair at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool, however, blessed with attacking potential, will be able to force a promising attack through the Everton defence as the pace of Luke Varney and the delivery of Charlie Adam may gift them a goal.

06-11-2010 15:30 Hamburger SV - 1899 Hoffenheim

Beware The (Literally) Wounded Tiger

There has only been one story in town if you're a HSV fan over the last few weeks and it revolves around the seemingly never-ending injury crisis engulfing the club. The ever expanding casualty list has stunted the progress of die Rothosen at the worst possible moment for three reasons. Firstly, they started reasonably well with Ruud van Nistelrooy in form before stuttering once neither Mladen Petric nor Paolo Guerrero came to terms with their role behind the Dutchman in Armin Veh's 4-2-3-1. Secondly, perennial favourites Bayern made their worst ever start and finally, Hamburg had no European distractions this season owing to their seventh-placed finish last term. Coach Veh is at a loss to explain the reasons for having so many players on the treatment table.

"This is absolutely not normal in any case. I don't know how one goes about analysing the situation. When we worked intensively in pre-season, we had not a single injury. Now the problems have come further on in the season. I can't understand it. It is difficult to pinpoint the reason but at the moment we're groping in the dark."

Last week's visit to then bottom side Koeln had been expected to herald a rejuvenation for die Rothosen but they went down 3-2 to the Milivoje Novakovic inspired Geissboecke. The major plus point was the quite outstanding debut goal in the Bundesliga from winger Heung-Min Son, who yesterday penned a contract extension. The Korean flicked the ball over the onrushing Miro Vardovic with his right foot before letting it drop and half-volleying with his left into the empty net. Few players have announced themselves on the Bundesliga stage with greater aplomb. A worrying sign was the poor performance from Heiko Westermann, normally one of the league's most reliable defenders. One thing is for sure, as Marcell Jansen has already made clear, should HSV come up short again, injuries will be no excuse.

Continuity Breeds Success In Sinsheim

"It is no coincidence that we are at the top."

The words of Hoffenheim midfielder Sebastian Rudy. And what a season it has been for him -
shipped out by Stuttgart as part of their suicidal transfer policy (and that's not hindsight speaking either) - he has now secured a spot in Ralf Rangnick's eleven who once again are occupying the upper echelons of the table after an excellent start to the season.

With ten points from their opening four games, including wins in the opening three encounters against title contenders Werder Bremen and Schalke 04, minds were cast back to their meteoric, if inevitably unsustainable rise to the top of the league two years ago. And once again this term, they suffered a blip, sparked off by Daniel van Buyten's last-gasp winner at the Rhein-Neckar Arena. However, they have recovered of late, putting in some highly impressive performances and were deeply unfortunate not to take all three points from the Signal-Iduna Park after Antonio Da Silva's controversial last-minute equaliser to secure a point for Borussia Dortmund.

There are many familiar faces in the Hoffenheim team, who have become synonymous with Dietmar Hopp's side during their maiden stint in Germany's top flight including Andreas Beck, Demba Ba and Sejad Salihovic. Coach Ralf Rangnick believes having such a settled squad is reaping rewards for Hoffe this season.

"It works to our advantage that the greater part of our team are playing together for a third season. There is never absolute stability in any squad but it does aid our development and should be maintained," Rangnick remarked.

Rangnick also evoked his side's excellent display in Dortmund and he hopes that will inspire a good performance and result tomorrow in the Imtech Arena.

"We know that Hamburg have come under pressure during the last few matches. If we can raise our game against them in front of their own fans, we have the chance to take at least a point, as we did in Dortmund."

TEAM NEWS

Hamburg

Hamburg are almost in a contest with Bayern for the most number of injuries at the moment. Armin Veh is without (brace yourselves) Mladen Petric, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Frank Rost, Marcell Jansen, Collin Benjamin, Dennis Aogo, Dennis Diekmaier, Eljero Elia, Miroslav Stepanek, Tunay Torun and Romeo Castelen. Erik Maxim Choupo-Moting may get the nod to play in behind over Piotr Trochowski while Ze Roberto is forced to deputise at left-back.

Probable Starting XI: Drobny - Rincon, Westermann, Mathijsen, Ze Roberto - Jarolim, Kacar - Son, Trochowski, Pitroipa - Guerrero

Hoffenheim

Ralf Rangnick can call on just about everyone in his squad, with the sole exception of the injured Josip Simunic as the veteran centre-back has a heel injury. Sejad Salihovic returns from his one-game suspension while Luiz Gustavo looks set to continue at left-back. The only other contentious issue appears to be whether Boris Vukcevic will get the nod over Tobias Weis in the Hoffe midfield.

Probable Starting XI: Starke - Beck, Vorsah, Compper, Luiz Gustavo - Rudy - Weis, Salihovic - Sigurdsson - Mlapa, Ba

Prediction
Hamburg are desperate for a win and should respond in front of their home fans but Hoffenheim are in good form and I am backing them to take a share of the spoils.

Hamburg 1-1 Hoffenheim

06-11-2010 13:45 Bolton Wanderers - Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs hoping to end Reebok hoodoo

Bolton have an impressive record against Spurs at the Reebok and they are currently unbeaten in their last 10 matches against them in the Premier League. In these 10 matches Bolton have scored more than double the number of goals their visitors have, restricting them to just eight goals whilst they have scored 17 themselves.

A victory for the home side would see them equal on points with the their opponents and lift them up from 11th place and into the top half of the table. A victory for Spurs would see them move into fourth place in the table and put pressure on Manchester City, who have now lost their last three games in all competitions.

Coyle aiming for first league win over Spurs

The match will see Owen Coyle come up against Tottenham in the league for the second time in his managerial career and he will be hoping it goes much better than the first encounter, which his Burnley side lost 5-0 in 2009.

However, he did have some success in the League Cup against Spurs in the 2008-09 season. The Clarets recovered from a 4-1 first leg defeat to Harry Redknapp's men in the semi-final to storm into a 3-0 lead at Turf Moor. But two late goals in extra time from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe broke Burnley hearts.

Harry Redknapp’s record against Bolton is fairly good, he was won seven out of 17 games against the Trotters, and he will be hoping that he can notch up a third victory over Bolton as Spurs manager.

TEAM NEWS

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton will be without key man Martin Petrov who is still suffering with the hamstring injury that kept him out of the Liverpool match, so Matt Taylor is expected to continue in place of the Bulgarian on the left wing.

Coyle will also be without Ricardo Gardner (thigh), Jlloyd Samuel (calf), Sean Davis and Joey O’Brien (both knee).

Possible starting line-up: Jaaskelainen; Steinsson, Cahill, Knight, Robinson; Lee, Holden, Muamba, Taylor; Elmander, K Davies.

Tottenham

One of the stars of the Inter victory in midweek, and the season so far, has been Gareth Bale, and Redknapp will look to his left winger to inspire Spurs to victory on a ground where they have not had a lot of luck in recent seasons.

However, they could be without another of their influential players, Rafael van der Vaart, who was substituted at half-time against Inter with a recurrence of a persistent hamstring injury.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes should return after being suspended for the match against Inter but after such exertions in midweek Redknapp may also be tempted to rest some of his players. Spurs will definitely be without Croatian defender Vedran Corluka (hamstring), Jermain Defoe (ankle), Michael Dawson (knee), Jamie O’Hara (back) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin).

Possible starting XI: Gomes; Hutton, Gallas, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Jenas, Palacios, Bale; Crouch, Pavlyuchenko.

Real i Barselona gaze. Barsa gostuje Hetafeu i realno je očekivati dvojku na ovom meču. Iako igra gradski derbi protiv Atletika, naša prva ekipa deluje sve uigranije i moćnije, pa na “Santjago Bernabeu” stadionu očekujem novu jedinicu.
HETAFE – BARSELONA     2
REAL M. - ATLETIKO M.     1

KRKA – CRVENA ZVEZDA minus poeni
