04.-05.12.2010. Bets of the week

04.12.2010. (Saturday)

16:00 Wigan Athletic - Stoke City
The match with the biggest draw bias this week is Wigan v Stoke. Record of teams of Wigan's grade when playing at home to teams of Stoke's grade reads H12 D13 A8.
Wigan's recent home record against teams of Stokes grading is W2 D4 L1. Stoke's recent away record against teams of Wigan's grading is W5 D2 L1. Head to Head recent record at Wigan reads Wigan 2 Draw 4 Stoke 3.
Wigan have drawn two of their last five home matches. Stoke have drawn one of their last five matches.
Tip: Wigan - Stoke draw match @ 3.10

18:00 Kasimpasaspor - Galatasaray
You won't find a deeper crisis in Europe right now than at Galatasaray. The Lions already fired Frank Rijkaard in favour of Gheorghe Hagi, but their fortunes didn’t change. They've taken just one point from their last four games, lost at home in a big derby to Besiktas last week, and amazingly dropped to 10th place.
The injuries are mounting, the dressing room is in total disarray with Bosnian star Zvjezdan Misimovic demoted to reserves, and the board outrageously agreed to sell Brazilian midfielder Elano to Santos for a mere 2.9 million.
On the other hand, having hit rock bottom, wounded Galatasaray are looking to reclaim some of their prestige. They have a nice opportunity to do so against newly promoted Kasimpasa, who already lost at home 2-6 to Fenerbahce and 0-7 to Trabzonspor. If Hagi can’t win here, his job will be in jeopardy, and the idea is to produce a goal-feast.
Therefore, a big-margin win for guests is not a bad bet here, given the generous odds.
Tips: Galatasaray to win @ 1.80, Galatasaray with -1 asian handicap (3.10)

18:30 Blackpool - Manchester United
The live Saturday evening game takes us to Blackpool to see if Manchester United will recover from their hammering at West Ham midweek, but punters would be foolish to read too much into that. Manchester United made 10 changes (and will likely do so again here) and I don't think we learned too much more from the game.
Manchester United are very short to win this one so we will have to be creative in our betting. Blackpool have done remarkably well this season of that there is no doubt, but they have struggled to keep the top sides out. Against the other top-four teams they've let in six against Arsenal, four against Chelsea and three against Manchester City. So I think we could be looking at another few goals and of course a Manchester United victory.
Tips: Over 3.5 goals in the game @ 2.15

05.12.2010. (Sunday)

18:30 Kavala - Olympiakos
Olympiacos play away to Kavala in a game where anything else than a win will be considered a failure especially after a poor performance and a defeat in the derby against AEK. Olympiacos has quality with players like Kevin Mirallas, Ibagaza or Marko Pantelic and although they will be missing Albert Riera due to injury, Melberg and Torosidis are due to return to first team duty.
Kavala are having a great season so far as they stand third in the table but will be missing several of their most influential players. Minus some of their stars Kavala aren't the same team and will face a travelling support of 7,000 Olympiacos fans so this won't be the normal home/away game where the advantage is with the hosts.
I expect Olympiacos to win this game quite easily and handicapping looks the way to go.
Tip: Olympiacos (-1) @ 2.50

19:00 Villarreal - Sevilla
Villarreal welcome Sevilla to El Madrigal on Sunday in what promises to be an entertaining encounter. The Yellow Submarine have been excellent this season, very consistent particularly at home and they seen off Zaragoza 3-0 last week on the road.
Sevilla have not been in good shape lately and are leaking goals with a disjointed midfield that creates very little for their attack. They were brutally exposed by Getafe last week losing 3-1 and won' t be in good spirits. I'm expecting a few goals in this match, over 2.5 is 1.75 with Villarreal to come out on top @ 1.80.
Tip: Villarreal to win @ 1.80

04-12-2010 22:00 Real - Valencia

Not Humiliated

Not only did Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid lose their unbeaten record when they were hammered by Barcelona last Monday, they also lost their dignity as a string of unwanted records were suddenly placed beside them. The Portuguese coach is known for his mental strength in tight situations, but he has never been faced by the prospect of bouncing back after such a defeat, and a dangerous Valencia side would probably not be his choice of opposition for Saturday evening.

There was genuine optimism around the Bernabeu approaching the game in Catalunya earlier this week, but from the outset it was clear that los Merengues would find living with a Barca side at the peak of their powers an impossible task. By full-time, the discipline of the Madrid side had vanished, and Sergio Ramos’ red card only added to the pain of a 5-0 drubbing.

“One team played very good, one team very bad,” Mourinho confessed to the press. “I've always said that the club [Barcelona] is a finished product and Madrid are a long way short.

“Humiliated? No. It's easy to deal with this loss, we just weren't good enough.”

The rhetoric around the camp is good. There is an acceptance of the pain suffered on Monday, but equally there is a desire to right what was a very poor performance. Against los Che, los Blancos have an immediate chance to show the rest of Spain that they are in the title race for the duration and won’t be finished by Barca’s tour de force.

Be Careful

Valencia may be one of Spain’s greatest clubs, but they approach this fixture very much in the shadow of Real Madrid given recent events. That won’t necessarily displease coach Unai Emery, whose men are starting to emerge from a four match winless streak in the autumn that has cost them a place in the top four at present.

Much of their positive work has been done at home, with victories over Rangers, Getafe, Bursaspor and Almeria serving to boost confidence. On their travels in La Liga, however, they have not won since the last weekend in September, when Sporting de Gijon were beaten 2-0. Going to Real Madrid, even a Real Madrid in a state of shock, will be no easy ask.

“Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are at their highest level ever,” Cesar Sanchez told the media. “In addition, Madrid are characterised by being able to recover from painful losses, and they will be looking forward to Saturday’s game.

“We have the same desire to win as them. We must play our game and work hard for 90 minutes, because they will not forgive mistakes, and they can change the game in an instant.”

Chasing the final Champions League spot, los Che will see Saturday night’s encounter as an opportunity to earn some unexpected points at the Bernabeu. Madrid are vulnerable, but by the same token, Valencia are unpredictable and must approach this fixture with the vigilance it requires. From Cesar’s comments, the mentality appears to be right.

TEAM NEWS

Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence in the squad is headline news as he was doubtful earlier this week due to an inflamed tendon. Ezequiel Garay is also present.

Sergio Canales, Gonzalo Higuain, Kaka and Fernando Gago remain on the sidelines due to injury.

Ricardo Carvalho and Sergio Ramos are both suspended.

Valencia

Cesar and Moya are out, so third choice goalkeeper Guaita will be given the honour of protecting the net. David Navarro and Vicente are overlooked due to technical decisions, while Jeremy Mathieu, Sofiane Feghouli Manuel Fernandes and Mehmet Topal are injured.

Prediction
Much will be learnt about this Real Madrid side by the way they respond to last weekend’s game. Jose Mourinho would expect to have his men going into this fixture with a positive and determined mentality, which could make all the difference come full-time.

Real Madrid 2-1 Valencia

04-12-2010 21:00 Montpellier Herault - Olympique Lyonnais

Bounce Back

Since Montpellier’s latest ascent to the top level of the French game, they’ve managed to chisel a reputation of having a well organised defensive unit and an attacking corps that has flair and efficiency when required. None of these attributes were on show when they went down 4-0 against Olympique de Marseille last weekend, and coach Rene Girard will demand better with the visit of Olympique Lyonnais.

La Paillade actually started the fixture at the Stade Velodrome fairly well, but once Lucho Gonzalez had been afforded time to smash home the opening goal it quickly went downhill, with Benoit Cheyrou’s deflected strike moments later rather summing up the efforts of MHSC on an evening that nothing seemed to break for them.

Girard was acceptant of that defeat, stressing that he feels OM are the dominant team in France at present and aware that the loss was, what he hopes, a one-off. The former France Under-21 coach, who is well suited to his present role coaching a club with a great deal of fresh-faced talent, will not be quite so forgiving if his side slump again, particularly at home.

Montpellier may have won six of 16 home matches against Lyon in Ligue 1 in the past, but their recent record makes for relatively grim reading. Only once since 1997 have the Stade de la Mosson club overcome les Gones on home soil, and in each of the last two meetings they’ve gone down to defeats without so much as scoring. A more streetwise approach is necessary.

Continue To Progress

Lyon may have made what was considered by many fans to be a disastrous start to their Ligue 1 campaign, yet last weekend they had the chance to move top of the standings when they met Paris Saint-Germain. Claude Puel’s team couldn’t earn a victory, despite going 1-0 up, and indeed a point was very welcome by full-time.

Aly Cissokho turned from goal scoring hero to villain when he fouled Nene in the box. The left-back was dismissed and Guillaume Hoarau confidently placed the ball past Hugo Lloris to compliment the Brazilian’s earlier equaliser and put PSG 2-1 up. Had it not been for a horrible goalkeeping error that allowed Bafetimbi Gomis to score, OL would most likely have lost.

“It's good to have been able to equalise despite the numerical disadvantage, which shows character, but we had chances to double our lead,” Claude Puel explained.

“I believe we have delivered in a big game. There were good performances from both sides, including the fast counterattacks from our opponents.

“We must continue to get points and progress, beating the top teams when we face them. It would have been nice to win this match.”

Montpellier may not be perceived to be one of the top teams in France by the wider public, but Puel will appreciate just what a test the weekend’s match is likely to be.

TEAM NEWS

Montpellier

Marco Estrada will miss out for the second successive week, but Montpellier haven’t disclosed the nature of the South America’s problem. Cyril Jeunechamp is the only other casualty.

Lyon

There is good news for Lyon in that both Yoann Gourcuff and Cris should return to action. On the other hand, Aly Cissokho and Pape Diakhate are both suspended.

Ederson, Clement Grenier and Cesar Delgado are all still injured.

Prediction
Montpellier will be hungry to bounce back after last weekend’s reverse and certainly have the ability to pick up a point at home against a Lyon side who have never served to convince this season. If Rene Girard can get the mentality of his team correct, they should be good enough to preserve their strong home record.

Montpellier HSC 1-1 O. Lyon

04-12-2010 18:30 Blackpool - Manchester United

Tangerine Dream Alive

In ordinary circumstances Mark Davies' late equaliser for Bolton Wanderers in last weekend's 2-2 draw would have been a bitter blow to take. Such has been Blackpool's acclimatisation to the Premier League after nearly 40 years away that the lost points are unlikely to be critical to their hopes of staying up.

The swagger of Holloway's players has been a welcome relief to the usual 'safety first' football deployed by promoted sides. Indeed, had they held on to a 2-0 lead at the Reebok Stadium they would have found themselves in seventh place in the table.

Unexpectedly, Blackpool have never boasted a strong record against United, with 20 wins notched up to their opponents' 43 in this fixture. For fans of an elderly persuasion, a repeat of the 5-1 League Cup drubbing handed out in 1966-67 would truly seem to be a Tangerine pipe dream.

Back To Winning Ways

United's youngsters were humbled against West Ham but the senior stars will be out to prove they sit at the top of the Premier League on merit.

An unbeaten run that stretched back to Joe Cole's back-heeled winner for Chelsea in April should be maintained at Bloomfield Road. Ferguson's charges have hit their stride at the right time and are on the on-form side in the division with 14 points from the last 18.

United haven't tasted league defeat on the seaside resort since 1963. It would be a major upset if a second loss in a week followed.

TEAM NEWS

Blackpool

Manager Ian Holloway confirmed on Thursday that utility man Chris Basham has broken his leg and could be out until the final weeks of the season.

The summer signing has joined Marlon Harewood, Matt Gilks and Billy Clarke on the sidelines.

In better news, Israel international centre-back Dekel Keinan is expected to return to the match day squad after he overcame an ankle injury. Fellow defender Craig Cathcart is in line to face his former club.

Possible starting XI: Kingson; Eardley, Cathcart, Evatt, Crainey; Grandin, Adam, Vaughan; Taylor-Fletcher, Campbell, Varney.

Manchester United

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson is set to recall his big guns after the second string's 4-0 mid-week League Cup humiliation to West Ham United. The exit could see the likes of Jonny Evans, Bebe and Tomasz Kuszczak restricted to reserve team football.

Dimitar Berbatov will be firing on all cylinders as he looks to follow up his five-goal haul from last Saturday's 7-1 victory against Blackburn Rovers. Paul Scholes wasn't even a substitute then due to a groin strain but is expected to be back.

Long-term absentees Owen Hargreaves, Antonio Valencia and Michael Owen are still unavailable.

Possible starting XI: Van der Sar; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Nani, Scholes, Carrick, Giggs; Rooney, Berbatov.

Prediction
United remain unbeaten in the Premier League and with the return of Wayne Rooney et al. this can only continue. Blackpool's expansive play should leave too many holes to be exploited.

Blackpool 1-5 Man Utd.

04-12-2010 - 18:00 Levante - Atletico Madrid

Not Afraid

Levante are named after a wind that occurs in the western region of the Mediterranean, but since winning promotion back to the top flight last summer, the football club have blown few sides away. Dismissed by Hercules last weekend, Luis Garcia’s side are floating just above the relegation zone and will need one of their best performances of the season to salvage anything against Atletico Madrid.

Los Granotes were simply outgunned by los Herculanos last weekend. In terms of overall quality on the field they were not a great deal behind, but in terms of ability in front of goal, Nelson Valdez and David Trezeguet had no equals on the visiting side, whose sole goal came from substitute Ruben Suarez, who had come on for the injured Felipe Caicedo.

Ruben is nevertheless confident ahead of Saturday’s difficult looking encounter. “Atletico is a big rival, but we will not be defeated and cannot be afraid of anyone,” he explained to Marca. “We may lose but they will have to do very well and run a lot. I trust this team to death.”

Meanwhile, Juanlu has expressed his hope that los Colchoneros don’t arrive in Valencia with their top stars such as Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan. Without players of such calibre of their own, los Granotes will again struggle defensively, having lost 23 goals already this season. On a run of five defeats in their last six games, they really need to stop the bleeding.

Tactically Awful

Atletico Madrid’s season started with a great deal of promise. Two successive wins at the start of the campaign had tails up in the Spanish capital, but reality has since set in to Quique Sanchez Flores’ side, who have just endured their hardest week of the campaign to date.

At the Vicente Calderon last weekend they were outgunned 3-2 by Champions League rivals Espanyol, but worse was to follow in midweek when they were beaten by an identical scoreline by Greek minnows Aris in the Europa League, leaving the champions’ progression to the knockout stages still uncertain.

“It was a game similar to Espanyol and we were poor,” Flores explained to the media after Wednesday’s tie. “The last 10 minutes have been tactically awful.

“We lacked intelligence. We played very upset, very nervous.”

Atleti’s European future is now out of their hands after a nightmare evening in the Spanish capital, but they must quickly lay the foundations for a repeat assault on the continent next season. At present, los Colchoneros sit seventh in Spain’s top flight and are by no means guaranteed a place in Europe next term. The prestige of the club has taken a battering over the last few days, though victory against Levante will restore some pride.

TEAM NEWS

Levante

Christian Stuani has suffered from a heavy blow to his foot, but the club’s medical services have confirmed there is no break and he hence returned to training earlier this week. Care is also being taken over Felipe Caicedo and Xisco Nadal. Asier del Horno is back from injury though.

Hector Rodas, Xisco Munoz, Nacho Gonzalez, Iborra and Miguel Perez are all still out.

Atletico

Tiago is suspended after crossing the disciplinary threshold, but there has been some good news as long-term problem Borja Gonzalez has started training with the first team squad again. Diego Godin has not returned after a kidney operation and Sergio Asenjo is missing too.

Prediction
Even with a midweek match to distract them, Atletico Madrid should prove too powerful for Levante. Home or away, the Valencia side have struggled to contain opponents, and with a dangerous forward line that appears to be clicking into gear, los Colchoneros should bounce back from last weekend’s surprising loss to register a win at the Ciutat de Valencia.

Levante 1-3 Atletico Madrid

04-12-2010 18:00 Chievo Verona - Roma

Mid-Table Security

Chievo are floating comfortably in Serie A and are gradually becoming an also-ran - a luxury in one of the most competitive domestic leagues in Europe in which half of the 20 teams tend to fight against the drop while the rest 10 battle for places in Europe.

Last weekend Ceo didn't feature in any league match as their encounter with Bologna was postponed because of bad weather conditions. Results elsewhere mean that after 14 rounds of matches in Serie A, the Flying Donkeys are tenth in the league standings with 19 points but with a game in hand.

In midweek Stefano Pioli's side secured their place in the fifth round of the Coppa Italia with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Novara. The Verona-based club are unbeaten in their last four competitive fixtures and defeated Italian and European champions Inter 2-1 in their last Serie A match.

Recovering From Weekend Defeat

Roma's eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end last weekend when they went down 3-1 to Palermo in Sicily. The victory forced Claudio Ranieri's side outside the top six as the Lupi are currently stationed in seventh place with 22 points from 14 games.

While Roma's recent resurgence had increased the pitch of the whispers about a Scudetto challenge, their loss to the Rosanero subdued them again. League leaders Milan are eight points ahead of them and the Giallorossi do have a lot of ground to cover.

Roma's woes are augmented by their poor away record. The former Italian champions have registered just a single victory on the road in the league campaign and have conceded a whooping 13 goals in seven matches.

TEAM NEWS

Chievo

Luciano and Thereau are out injured for the Flying Donkeys, who are likely to field a 4-3-1-2 formation with Pellissier and Moscardelli as the two strikers.

Roma

Perrotta and Riise will miss the trip to Verona for the Lupi, who will adopt a 4-3-1-2 system which will see Totti and Borriello start as the two forwards and Menez as the playmaker behind them.

Prediction
Chievo are flying high and will make life extremely tough for the visiting Roma. Having defeated mighty Inter last month, the Flying Donkeys will be confident of inflicting a defeat on Ranieri's team but they are most likely to manage a draw.

Chievo 2-2 Roma

04-12-2010 16:00 Manchester City - Bolton Wanderers

Focus Returns To The Domestic Campaign

City’s recent victory over Salzburg means that they have now qualified for the knockout stage in the Europa League, which gives manager Roberto Mancini some breathing space in being able to concentrate on the task at hand in the Premier League.

The club’s aim is to finish in the top four and achieve Champions League football next season, but the current form compared with that of their immediate rivals, Tottenham, would be that the Sky Blues are unlikely to finish above the London-based club.

But Mancini’s men have shown that they can play some fine football when the occasion calls for it, with proof in the form of the 4-1 victory over Fulham. But the former Inter boss must ensure that his side can produce such performances over and over again, if they should achieve their season objectives.

City have done well to go on an unbeaten run of five league games without a loss, but three draws in the last four aren’t really the kind of results that a team pushing for a top four finish would want to achieve.

Finally, the hosts are in a bit of a spot when it comes to winning at home, since their last victory in the league at the City of Manchester Stadium was two months ago against Newcastle United.

In Top Form

Bolton were sizzling hot through the month of November as they managed to go undefeated, and look to continue their run at Eastlands.

The Trotters are currently in sixth place, only three points behind their Manchester-based opponents. And much of the achievement to date has to be credited to their manager, Owen Coyle.

The gaffer left Burnley to take charge at the Reebok in January, with a section of the critics claiming that he had made a move in the sideways direction in terms of the direction in which his career was headed.

However, Coyle has since answered his naysayers over and over again, as he has turned a team that was fighting for dear life in the top flight last season into one that is challenging for a Europa League spot this term.

But if they are to turn that dream into a reality, then the recent form they have shown must continue, with Eastlands being added as another feather in the manager’s cap.

Still, even a top 10 finish - which would likely be the present target - would prove to be a very positive season for the visitors, but any more, and that’s a bonus.

TEAM NEWS

Manchester City

Young striker Mario Balotelli is a doubt after falling prey to a hamstring injury during the recent Europa League victory over Salzburg. Emmanuel Adebayor (groin) and Wayne Bridge (hamstring) are also doubtful of making it in time for this encounter. Michael Johnson (knee) is a long-term absentee.

Gareth Barry, Nigel de Jong and Yaya Toure should return to the line-up, having not played any part in the 3-0 win in the last match. They should come in at the expense of Adam Johnson, Patrick Vieira and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Possible starting XI: Hart; Richards, K Toure, Kompany, Kolarov; Y Toure, De Jong, Barry; Silva, Tevez, Balotelli.

Bolton Wanderers

Sean Davis (knee), Ricardo Gardner (thigh), Joey O’Brien (knee), and Jlloyd Samuel (calf) all remain out of action due to their respective injuries, but manager Owen Coyle has no new worries since last week’s draw with Blackpool.

Possible starting XI: Jaaskelainen; Ricketts, Cahill, Knight, Robinson; Lee, Muamba, M Davies, Taylor; K Davies, Elmander.

Prediction
Bolton have scored 15 goals in their last five games. And with City having not won a league game in the past two months at Eastlands, both sides would be expected to play good, positive, attacking football.

City possess the star power and the financial muscle, but Bolton have form on their side. So a good high scoring draw could be on the cards.

Man City 2-2 Bolton
