Jose Mourinho will be unable to call upon flying winger Angel Di Maria, who remains sidelined with a knee problem. Elsewhere, Sergio Ramos continues to deputise for Ricardo Carvalho in the centre of defence, with a back injury giving the Portuguese stopper cause for concern. And the Portuguese coach also confirmed in Monday's pre-match press conference that Kaka is still out and won't return to training until Thursday.

Meanwhile, Fabio Coentrao sat out the 3-2 weekend win over Valencia with a thigh injury sustained on international duty, and Marcelo should keep his place on the left of the defence. The only other selection dilemma plaguing Mourinho will be in attack, where both Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain continue to score on a regular basis. With Benzema starting on Saturday at the Mestalla, expect the Argentine to come back into the side.

Zagreb have been dealt a blow with the news that Josip Simunic's calf injury will prevent him from featuring at Santiago Bernabeu. Ivan Kelava is also struggling with a knee problem, meaning Filip Loncaric could deputise.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The weekend victory at Valencia represented Jose Mourinho's 50th La Liga game in charge at Real Madrid.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has struck 24 goals in as many games for club and country so far this season, building on his astonishing 40 league strikes in 2010-11.
  • Los Blancos have notched victories in their last 11 matches in all competitions.
  • Dinamo Zagreb are the only side yet to score in this season's Champions League group stages.
  • Indeed, their nine goals conceded represents the joint-highest total in the competition.
  • The record is in stark contrast to their domestic form, where they have conceded just five times in 15 league matches.

Prediction
With Zagreb missing key personnel in defence and Madrid in formidable form, this should prove to be no more than an evening stroll for the Spanish side, with qualification to the next round already ensured.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to make some changes to his team for this fixture, as Nemanja Vidic's suspension is likely to see Rio Ferdinand partnering Chris Smalling in the heart of defence. Jonny Evans has been reported to have missed training, prompting speculation that he may have suffered a knock.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney is also thought to have skipped training, which has raised a question mark concerning whether or not the forward will be involved in the tie. However, if fit, the striker should start.

Phil Jones and Fabio should fight for the right-back spot, but the former could be selected due to his recent performances coupled with the praise he has received from both Sir Alex as well as England boss Fabio Capello.

As far as Benfica are concerned, Ruben Amorim, Bruno Cesar and Nicolas Gaitan are fighting for positions on the flanks, while Oscar Cardozo should receive some support from either Pablo Aimar or Rodrigo.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Manchester United have managed to emerge triumphant against Benfica in six of the last eight meetings between the two sides.
  • The three-time European champions have scored eight goals in four group games. Only Barcelona, Chelsea and Real Madrid have managed to score more goals in their respective fixtures.
  • Since 2002, United have only lost to Besiktas and AC Milan at Old Trafford. This means that they have been defeated only twice in 56 games on their own turf.
  • Benfica managed to beat United back in 2005 in Lisbon, sending them out of the group stage. At the time, it was the first time in over a decade that the Old Trafford club had bowed out of the group stage of the competition.
  • The Portuguese side have been defensively solid in the group stage, conceding only two goals. Marseille and Real Madrid are the only two sides to have shipped fewer.
  • The Lisbon-based club are unbeaten in their last four outings away from home in the European competition. In total, they have gone eight games without suffering a loss.
Prediction
The home side have been achieving the necessary results on their own turf for many years now, and should have no significant trouble registering a victory. But they will have to put in a fair amount of effort to rip through the Portuguese team's defence, which has been miserly so far in the tournament.

Marek Cech failed to complete the 90 minutes on Friday, and is unlikely to feature against Claudio Ranieri's side. Serkan Balci will move back into defence, while Ondrej Celustka will shuffle across to left-back to make up for the Slovakian's absence.

Inter are still without several defenders for the trip to Turkey, including Maicon and Yuto Nagatomo, but Christian Chivu is available again following his domestic suspension, while Lucio will return to the squad. Meanwhile, Wesley Sneijder is a confirmed absence for the trip to the Black Sea coast.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Trabzonspor head coach Senol Gunes kept goal in his side's 1-0 victory over Inter in the 1983-84 European Cup.
  • Friday's 1-1 draw with Mersin Idman Yurdu was the first Super Lig game in which Burak Yilmaz has failed to score this season.
  • The 1-0 victory at San Siro was Trabzonspor's first Champions League triumph since a 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev in the 2004-05 qualifying rounds.
  • Inter were defeated on their last trip to Turkey, succumbing 1-0 to Fenerbahce in September 2007.
  • Despite losing in Trabzon in the aforementioned encounter, Inter went through thanks to five straight wins, including a 2-0 win in Milan.
  • Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar and Trabzonspor midfielder Alanzinho played together for Flamengo in the 2003 season.
Prediction
Turkey is never an easy place for a team to travel, but at Inter have a superior team to their opponents. Buoyed on by their passionate support, Trabzonspor will put up a fight, but expect Claudio Ranieri's men to record a narrow victory and secure their place in the last 16.

Ajax coach Frank de Boer will have to make do without the services of defenders Nicolai Boilesen and Bruno Silva due to injury, while midfielder Siem de Jong as well as attackers Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, Dmitry Bulykin and Derk Boerrigter are unavailable as well.

Lyon boss Remi Garde could be without the likes of Dejan Lovren and John Mensah due to injury, while Jeremy Pied and Yannis Tafer are unlikely to feature, too.

However, Lisandro Lopez, Michel Bastos and Clement Grenier all returned to match action in last Friday's Liague 1 game against Stade Rennais, and are expected to feature at some stage here.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Before the defeat by Madrid on matchday four, Lyon had lost only twice in 20 home Champions League fixtures, including the play-off round.
  • Bafetimbi Gomis has been caught offside 11 times, more than any other player.
  • The Ligue 1 outfit were beaten 2-0 by Ajax the last time both sides met in Lyon back in October 2002.
  • Ajax have kept three times as many clean sheets in four Champions League games as they have kept in 13 Eredivisie matches.
  • The Amsterdam giants qualify for the knockout round for the first time since 2005-06 if the beat Lyon or record a score draw.
  • Ajax have collected three yellow cards so far; the lowest total in the competition.

Prediction
Neither of the two teams have really been able to impress in the 2011-12 campaigns as they have been struggling domestically. Nevertheless, Ajax have looked good in the Champions League and know that they are very close to reaching the knockout stages. Lyon have been superb at the Stade Gerland in recent years though and will be determined to keep their chances of making it to the next round alive by bagging the full three points. With the return of several key players, Lyon seem to be the favourite ahead of Tuesday's encounter.

Jupp Heynckes is unlikely to make major changes to the team that narrowly lost to Borussia Dortmund last week. Despite his average performance against BVB, Arjen Robben is expected to keep his place in the first XI, meaning youngster David Alaba will have to settle for a place on the bench.

The definite absentees for the Bavarians are defender Holger Badstuber, who is suspended after picking up a red card against Napoli earlier this month, and vice-captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, who broke his collarbone in the same game and will be out until the end of the calendar year.

Villarreal are in the middle of a full-blown injury crisis as no less than five first-team players are out with physical problems. Midfielders Cani and Javier Camunas plus defender Cristian Zapata are yet to return after picking up knocks against Rayo Vallecano, and are rated doubtful for the match on Tuesday.

Juan Carlos Garrido will not be able to rely on Giuseppe Rossi, who has been ruled out until the end of the season, and Nilmar, who underwent knee surgery in early October. Ex-River Plate striker Marco Ruben is to spearhead the attack for the Yellow Submarine.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Bayern Munich have picked up 10 wins from their last 11 games at home in the Champions League.
  • The Bavarians have lost only once in Germany against Spanish opposition. This happened in 2002-2003 Champions League, when Deportivo battled to a 3-2 victory in Munich, courtesy of hat-trick by future Bayern striker Roy Makaay.
  • Jupp Heynckes was in charge of the last German team to lose to Villarreal at home as last season his Bayer Leverkusen were defeated 3-2 by the Yellow Submarine in Europa League round of 16.
  • Villarreal have conceded nine goals in the Champions League so far this year, which is the joint highest total.
  • The Yellow Submarine have lost their last four away games in European competitions.
  • On Saturday Villarreal picked up only their fourth win in 22 matches since early May. Borja Valero was on target for Garrido's men in a 1-0 victory over Real Betis.
Prediction
Bayern Munich have managed to bounce back with a win after all of their three losses this season, and there is no reason to expect the opposite on Tuesday. Villarreal will put up a fight, but will have a hard time coming out of the Allianz Arena with a positive result.

The home side should have a full squad to choose from with the hosts welcoming back Milan Perendija after the defenders' red card at home to Manchester United kept him out of the return fixture at Old Trafford.

The Romanian champions should also welcome back Ionuţ Neag; the midfeilder is unlikely to start the game but may well feature from the bench.

The visitors will still be without long-term absentees Valentin Stocker and Gilles Yapi who are both still recovering from knee ligament injuries. Kay Voser should also miss out, courtesy of the ankle injury that has kept the defender sidelined since mid-September.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Otelul Galati have mustered just five wins in 11 home matches this season, and four in nine on their travels.
  • The Galati outfit have lost seven of their last 16 games in all competitions.
  • Only one member of Otelul's squad, Sorin Frunza, has played Champions League football before. He made five appearances for FC Unirea Urziceni in the 2009-10 group stage.
  • Basel have scored in each of their 16 league matches this season, keeping seven clean sheets.
  • Alexander Frei has scored 13 goals in his last 13 outings for Basel, including three penalties.
  • Benjamin Huggel is the only player in this season's competition to have collected four yellow cards.
Prediction
The visitors are still in a position to qualify from the group and a win here would leave them with a good chance of realising that dream. With talents such as Xherdan Shaqiri and Alexander Frei among their ranks, the Swiss champions should emerge with a comfortable victory over the Champions League newcomers.

For the hosts, Walter Mazzarri is likely to make just the single change from the side that drew a blank against Lazio on Sunday, as Walter Gargano is set to replace Blerim Dzemaili in central midfield. However, it is likely that there won't be as much luck for Goran Pandev, who despite his impressive cameo at the weekend, should remain on the bench.

A win is crucial for Neapolitan hopes of progressing from the group stage, as anything other than the points in the bag could consign the southern Italian giants to the Europa League spot in Group A. However, with only one absence in Marco Donadel, plus Miguel Britos returning to fitness, preparations are running smoothly for the Serie A club.

Meanwhile for Manchester City, who will rubber-stamp their qualification with a victory on Tuesday, an estimated trio of alterations are in the offing for Roberto Mancini. David Silva, who started as a substitute in the Premier League leaders' 3-1 win over Newcastle, is expected to return to the fold in the place of Mario Balotelli.

In addition, Sergio Aguero is likely to be replaced by Edin Dzeko, while Aleksandar Kolarov should come in for Gael Clichy at left-back. The incoming pair have excelled in Europe's premier club competition this season.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Napoli are unbeaten at the San Paolo in 10 matches, a run that stretches all of 17 years, including this season's win against Villarreal and draw with Bayern Munich.
  • In addition, they have also have a watertight defensive record at home; Toni Kroos' goal for Bayern in the 1-1 draw ended a run of 573 minutes without conceding at home in Europe.
  • Interestingly, this is only Napoli's second home fixture against an English opponent; the first was a 0-0 draw with Liverpool in last season's Europa League.
  • Manchester City are still looking for their first win in Italy at the fourth attempt. The feat could follow up with their first ever Champions League victory and also their first away victory in the competition, both coming against Villarreal on matchday four.
  • They ended a wait of three decades to visit Serie A opposition last season by drawing 1-1 with Juventus in the Europa League group stage last season.
  • That result at the Stadio Grande Torino means that City's last three games against sides from the peninsula have finished 1-1.
Prediction
Napoli are a plucky, exciting side who certainly have a goal in them with their blistering counter-attacks but, despite their putting up a great fight at the Etihad Stadium, it seems unlikely that they will come out of this fixture with their hopes of qualifying intact. Roberto Mancini has City running riot at the minute and the likes of Balotelli and Silva should be able to pick holes in their wing-back system. Expect the Premier League leaders to push on into the knockout stages.

Leonid Slutskiy will welcome back striker Vagner Love after he missed the 2-1 defeat to Rubin Kazan at the weekend due to suspension, and he will likely be a straight replacement for Seydou Doumbia, who will be sidelined courtesy of his red card on matchday four. Zoran Tosic's knee ligament injury sustained in training at the beginning of November is likely to keep him out until the new year.

Igor Akinfeev, Tomas Necid and Mark Gonzalez are all long-term absentees, but playmaker Keisuke Honda has made his comeback after three months out with a knee problem.

For the French side, Benoit Pedretti missed Friday's stalemate against Toulouse due to a hip injury, and may miss out on the clash. Florent Balmont returned from a knee injury to play 90 minutes in the same match, and is likely to retain his place. Marko Basa has been struggling with a shoulder injury in recent weeks and may once again be forced to sit out.

Rudi Garcia can, however, welcome back defender Mathieu Debuchy, who was suspended at the weekend.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • CSKA's seven-game unbeaten run came to an end when Rubin Kazan defeated them in their last outing. Striker Seydou Doumbia, who is suspended for this match, missed a second-half penalty.
  • Doumbia, however, did convert in the first half - taking his tally to 11 goals in his last seven outings.
  • Before this season Lille had faced Russian opposition just once before, taking on Zenit St Petersburg in the 2004-05 Uefa Cup group stage.
  • Lille have conceded 12 goals away from the Stade Lille-Metropole in all competitions this season.
  • The Ligue 1 champions have lost just one of their last 14 away matches in all competitions - versus Inter on matchday three.
  • Striker Moussa Sow is on the shortlist for the Caf African Footballer of the Year award.
Prediction
Lille have struggled to come to terms with the step up to Champions League football, while CSKA are difficult to overcome on home turf. The Russians will be within touching distance of the next round with victory, and they should have enough, even without suspended striker Doumbia.

22-11-2011 Tuesday Preview

CSKA Moscow - Lille 2.35 - 3.50

Leading CSKA striker Doumbia will be suspended for this match. His offensive colleague Tosic is out injured as well as defender Schennikov. CSKA lost their last league game, a home game against Rubin Kazan 1-2. Certainly not according to plans, but I noticed that Honda was playing again. The Japanese midfielder has yet to feature in the Champions League, but he will play tomorrow.

Hazard will be back in the Lille starting line up, but it does not look too good for Basa and Pedretti. Debuchy will return from his suspension. There is not much to think about for Lille. They absolutely have to go for the three points on the synthetic pitch tomorrow. They have the capacity to defeat CSKA, but so far they have underachieved in their European displays. Inexperience or who knows what but something has been missing. They have been in the lead a couple of times, for instance 2-0 at home to CSKA, but so far no wins. Looking at the odds, I have to say that the value is on the home win.

Trabzonspor - Inter 3.20 - 2.54

A draw here and Inter are through to the next round. Maybe they want to do better. Inter lost their home game against this Trabzonspor side (second in the Turkish league) and the Inter players are looking for sweet revenge. After that disastrous start Inter have won three group games on the bounce, two of them away fixtures against CSKA and Lille. Best side in this group, no doubt.

Both Lucio and Nagatomo will be back in contention for this fixture, but Sneijder is out injured. I am not screaming like everyone else when Sneijder is missing. He was great like the entire Inter side when they won the treble coached by Mourinho, but I have not seen anything in particular from Sneijder for quite some time now.

Trabzonspor have drawn their previous two home games and as the draw will be a positive result for Inter I will not rule out the draw result. X2 game.

Bayern Munich - Villarreal 1.17 - 20.00

Pointless Villarreal are still missing their two strikers G Rossi and Nilmar as well as Gonzalo Rodriguez, Zapata,Cani and Camunas. Bayern will miss Schweinsteiger and Badstuber, but A Robben is available again. Villarreal, at this moment, are not good enough to compete on this top level and they will most likely lose their fifth straight group game tomorrow.

Napoli - Manchester City 4.10 - 2.07

Who is not looking forward to this fixture? So much at stake. Man City, the stronger side, will be against a Napoli side known to play some unbelievable games at their own stadium from time to time. Usually there are many goals scored in those fixtures and usually Cavani is scoring two or three of those goals.

The odds are right, in my opinion, but I am bit surprised that the bookmakers took this stand, so clearly pro Man City. I mean, City have not really impressed in Europe. OK, they looked convincing against Villarreal in their last match, but Villarreal were without half of their team on that day.

I am pretty convinced that Napoli will allow Man City to dictate tomorrows game. Napoli are one of the few home teams that like to play on the counter, so do not be fooled when City are dominating the match, possession wise, that is. The odds on the away win are close to unbackable, but that is only my stand point.

Otelul - Basel 4.95 - 1.85

All credit to Basel. They are still in with a chance in this group, a group that everyone expected Man United and Benfica to dominate from start to finish. To everyones surprise, once again, Basel played out a 1-1 draw at Benfica. The fact is that Basel finished the game the stronger side. Fact is also that none of their veteran strikers A Frei and Streller played in Portugal. Both Streller and Frei started at the weekend for Basel and I take it for granted that they will be involved in tomorrows game.

Otelul remain pointless, but it is not like they have given up, or anything like that. They have offered decent displays against Man United, twice, but they do not possess enough quality to threaten a side like United. In their opening game they lost 1-2 away to Basel, but they could easily have drawn that match. A late red card destroyed their day.

This 1.85 on the away win is too paltry a price. Basel as big favourites away from home? In some way it does not seem right. No bet game for now.

Manchester Utd - Benfica 1.50 - 7.75

Benfica will be looking for one point at Old Trafford. They will not be the first European side trying to play a cautious game against United, but usually they end up with nothing. Maybe the Benfica players will be a bit elevated seeing that the United key defender Vidic will be missing due to a suspension. J Evans will probably join R Ferdinand in the United defence. W Rooney and J Evans did not take part in the United training session on Monday, but no explanation has been given. 1-0 or 2-0 for United.

Real Madrid - Dinamo Zagreb 1.08 - 36.00

Kind of exhibition game for Real and hopefully for Zagreb the home players will not be too excited about playing this rather meaning less fixture. Sometimes, well every so often, playing in the league, Real just keep on attacking winning the match with five or six goals happy to amuse their fans.

Real had a tough game against Valencia at the weekend, they face Atletico next in the derby and maybe they will take it easy against D Zagreb. I think so, but I would not bet on it.

Just noticed in the Spanish papers that Mourinho could give some of his many fringe players a starting role tomorrow. N Sahin, Altintop, Varane, Coentrao, Callejon and Granero may feature. Definitely missing will be Di Maria, Marcelo, Kaka and Arbeloa. So maybe D Zagreb (without Simunic and Vrsaljko) will not be smashed after all? Hell, I do not know.

Lyon - Ajax 1.85 - 4.75

Both L Lopez and M Bastos came on as second half substitutes for Lyon against Rennes. Their come backs could not prevent Lyon from losing the match. Bad rehearsal, but it has been worse for Ajax. In their last two league games they have picked up only one point and conceded eight goals. And I am talking about the Dutch league, certainly not the strongest in Europe.

Lyon count on Lovren and hopefully Gonalons to recover for this match and they will be at full strength. Ajax miss as many as three strikers, Sightorsson, De Jong and Bulykin. Their winger D Boerrigter will also miss this match along with defender Boilesen. Ebecillio could play upfront, maybe Lodeiro, maybe C Erikssen, maybe Sulejman or T Janssen, but in general Ajax look much weakened offensively for this game. Their leaking defence I have mentioned. On the whole unrest at the Ajax football club at the moment.

Make or break game for Lyon. They have to win this match and the Ajax injury situation has made their task looking quite easy. Very likely home win.

Chris
